Last night, Fast Fwd at Little Temple was business as usual with the squad hitting hard.  Another packed house with friends in the building. Met some cool new folks who came out for the first time and hope to see them all back next Saturday.  Had every Dj’s favorite moment where you could do no wrong and dropped some interesting joints into the set last night.   We continue next week!

Sundays are my favorite days to rest up and relax in the evening.  Headed up to the Drum circle to get some footage for this video clip im working on to promote the record.  I have a feeling tonight will be a long editing session.  Caught some pics.  Hope your weekend was enjoyable as well!

Catch you tomorrow (Monday night) on KCRW.  Lots of new records to share and break with you.

Love!

Another great night last night at Zanzibar!  Over 445 folks inside the venue. Biggups to all the friends who came through who I have not seen for a minute.  Last night was sleepless.  I went to bed at 6 am but managed to grab some shots before a walk on the beach.

Tonight we do so as part of Strictly Social’s weekly featuring some great live acts tonight.  Unfortunately for me I have extreme back pain at the moment and am resting up for tonight.  I think its from moving all these dam key boards. But thanks to some meds (thanks Sarah and Rachel) I think ill be fine.

These are some pics from last nights rehearsal. Hope to see you tonight (Nov 18th) at Little Temple. 4519 Santa Monica Blvd.  Hollywood Ca. Ill also have some cds for sale as well.

Great recording session yesterday w/ I,Ced

Posted in EVENTS with tags , , , , , on November 13, 2009 by antvala

Working on new music as well as preparing for our live show this Wednesday at Little Temple as part of the Strictly Social jump off.   I,Ced of the Hawthorne Headhunters collab’d on some new music which I cant wait to share with you all.  He, alongside Coultrain, Proh Mic and Black Spade will be opening for Dam Funk at the Echoeplex Thursday should you be around LA.

I love working with musicians that understand and master their craft.   Ced is one of those dudes who doesnt play the music, but feels the music.  So humbled to be surrounded by such wonderful talent!    Hope to se you Wednesday night in LA at Strictly Social as we get down.  Myself on (MPC/ Precessions / Beats) Dexter Story (Life Force Trio/Build An Ark on Bass), Wendisue on + Special guest on vocals.  I,Ced (Hawthorne Headhunters/HVYW8) on keys/synths) and Evan Lasrey (Keys/Percussions)

We hit the stage at 10 pm.   Hope to see you there.

Another day at the office.

Today has been an amazing day of just making things happen and connecting the dots.  I have a studio session today with I,Ced of Hawthorne Headhunters. Trying to wrap up some more sounds over some new beats.   If your in LA on the 19th, check him out at the Echoplex opening for Dam Funk.  But also, today was just a wonderful day as more positive reviews came in for Audio/Visual.   This is a new phase that Im not use to. Seeing your work get chopped, summarized, judged by others when the whole time when creating these sounds you never really had that in mind that it would be listened to, blogged about, etc.  You just made it cause you felt it.  Its opened my eyes in a alot of ways and now I check myself anytime I judge another artists work.   Just spread love and support.

FIREFLY KCRW’S TOP TUNE. 10.12.09

Kissey Asplund

Kissey Asplund

A major thank you to Ariana Morgenstern + Jason Bentley (Morning Becomes Eclectic) for picking the song I recorded w/ Kissey Asplund entitled Fire Fly as part of KCRW’s Top Tune of the day for Thursday November 12, 2009.   Earlier in the year they had selected “Azucar” as their top tune which you can download and peep here.   Fire Fly was recorded the night I first met Kissey and introduced her to In-N-Out, Los Angeles, and just the good energy that we have in LA.  She wanted to capture her expirience over one of my beats and after months of mixing, layering keys and bass lines, we created a musical baby I am very proud of.

Tune in to Morning Becomes Eclectic at the 11′o clock hour on November 10 on 89.9 KCRW or online at www.kcrw.com

Another late night after FAST FWD at LITTLE TEMPLE with friends. Thank you to everyone who came out. Another fun night and a packed house.   Its a blessing to be surrounded by good people with good energy and then hanging with the homie Leilani from Brooklyn + friends.  Im usually the first one to leave the venue so i can get to bed but these past few nights have me getting home late and being surrounded by people who just justify life and its beauty. Maybe im listening to too much Lennon and space love jazz, but I love my friends.

These past few nights have been really nice. Settled after a few weeks of stress however, life is good.  A major thank you to the folks who packed the house at Zanzibar last night.  We had a packed house with nothing but positive energy.   Always nice to do the classic double time booty set and watch people over 30 go bonkers.   After the parties I seem to end up on Fairfax or in Venice watching the drunks be drunks.   Hope to see you all tonight (Saturday at Little Temple).  We go twice as hard!

KCRW’S HALLOWEEN MASQUERADE BALL. 10.31.09

Posted in EVENTS with tags , , , on November 2, 2009 by antvala

Possibly the best party of the year held at the Park Plaza in DTLA.  Seeing so many people in costumes and watching Little Dragon rock out was a major plus for me personally.   Selection wise I tried to keep it moving with a world beat set that went into funk that went into house and that somehow stayed on the electro tip for a minute before ending w/ Blur’s Song 2.   Raul followed and I ventured off to see Little Dragon just hold the crowd in a musical daze with synth bass lines and Yukimi Nago strutting her moves like only she can!  Enjoy the pics!

Just got in the door and needed a rest.  Last night I had a great time spinning w/ Norm Rockwell at Bar Dynamite. The drive to SD from San Francisco was kind of hypnotic but thanks to the new Havana Cultura Cd I managed to stay awake and get down there.  San Francisco was alot of fun spinning w/ Spinnerty and friends at Wish Bar.  Little did I know but it was around the various Leather Bars and I was able to check one out.  Very interesting subculture.  While hanging with friends I realized I had to go to the bath room. I was warned “Ant, if you go in, you might not come out”. I avoided.  Anyhoo, Between the gigs, the recording sessions and the rehearsals with the live band, life has a been a roller coaster.  But its the a blessing to do what I love and I just wanted to take the time to thank everyone who has assisted me in this process and lent their own talent, guidance and assistance.

On a closing note, I managed to stop by MCRD in San Diego where I spent 3 months of my life getting yelled out by Drill instructors but after watching recruits getting chewed out today, it dawned on me that those lessons learned in addition to the push ups, the punishment, the head games all made me into who I am today.  And for that I am blessed.  I truly felt that I did not want to leave the base.  Everything my father failed to teach me by not being in my life, the Marine Corps compensated for. Okay no more cheesy afterschool thoughts.

Enjoy these pics!

Rehearsal w/ Wendisue + Dexter Story

The only pic I was able to catch while rocking @ Deep w/ Marques Wyatt.  I had an absolute blast.  Big ups to Joplin, Thuy and Marques for making me feel at home spinning some great music!   Make sure to check out these folks on a Sunday night @ The Vanguard!

In the spirit of.. Miguel Pinero

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , on October 21, 2009 by antvala

I never really told anyone but Miguel Pinero was a huge influence on my development and understanding of Theatre. I had a professor recommend to me that I read “Short Eyes” and I was instantly hooked at 80’s NYC street culture complete with tricks, pimps being incorporated into theatre productions.  It also influenced me to write about my own upbringing and made me comfortable in sharing my own story.

The Coolest scarf ever!

Posted in RANDOM with tags , , on October 21, 2009 by antvala

Had lunch with one of the coolest mothers around.  A hustler, a stylist/fashionista, a friend, a mother.  Seriously.. I admire one who can rock all those titles.  I asked about her scarf in which she replied “My daughter made it for me. Cut it up and asked me to wear it all day. So I did”.   So fresh I had to get a pic and share it with the world.

EM: Where were you raised? And how did it shape your sense of self?

I was born and raised in Van Nuys and North Hollywood, California.  I really don’t think that Van Nuys or North Hollywood shaped me, but rather allowed me to gain a sense of exploration by taking public transportation as a kid around town. I loved bus rides.  I loved watching people come home after a long day of work. They all seemed burnt-out  and there I was with my giant sony cd walkman and headphones.  I think that shaped me more than anything. I was curious about people, their destinations, their lives, their stories.

EM: How did discover music?

I was curious. I used to listen to the radio when I was too young to go out to clubs. This was obviously non-commercial radio- it was public radio taking chances with obscure music programs that fused speeches of content with sounds, loops and beats. I began to make loops with tape cassettes and it was a real ghetto DIY method, but eventually I saved up for turntables and was convinced with every piece of gear I bought with my summer jobs, I would have everything I needed.  So I saved to purchase drum machines, drums, guitars, and other instruments.  I began DJing and producing  in ‘93, but I wanted to do more than just create loops. I wanted to make music that touched people.

EM: You mention that cities like L.A. and S.F are inspiring to you? How so?

It’s the architecture of homes and buildings, the rhythm of the hills, traffic and the people that inspire me.  It’s a movement and energy in both cities that have always drive me. I love going to SF to spin because its an entire new environment.  Once I get home from a SF gig, I immediately jump on my mpc and create sounds to recreate the mood and energy that I gathered from there.  And the same goes for a long day in LA. The city creates and captures so many moods.

EM: You’ve talked about how everyday people and even inanimate objects like city lights create a sense of rebirth.  It seems like you feed off things around you and that helps your creative process. Can you explain further?

For me, they are art objects. They are visual.  But I try to transcend that and turn it into audio. Hence, the title of my album, Audio/Visual.  Objects inspire me.  I think we as humans take for granted the wonderful elements that surround us- taco trucks, city lights, traffic, sunsets, clouds, light, dust. I try to manifest all of it into sonic energy.  It’s all a discovery process for me.

EM: What music do you find yourself dozing off to?

I try not to doze off to music. I can’t actually. Music keeps me up.  My brain tends to explore the sounds rather than resting to sounds.

EM: Other than music, what other activities are you involved with or invest your time in?

Music tends to control a lot of my daily activities. Whether its digging for music for my radio show, digging for music for my club residencies, or simply making music, its a part of my life.  Since I moved to Venice, I have tried to step away from music a bit by taking up surfing or bike riding. But once I am back home, I turn on the mpc. I think I might need a musical intervention?

EM: What have you been working on as of late- any current projects?

I am working on new material with my friend Novena of Babystone who is an amazing vocalist and funketeer in Los Angeles. I have new beats that I am producing that are different than the last album.  I also just recorded and remixed a project for Amoeba Records off a Ricky Ray Rivera song featuring Illa Jay (Delicious Vinyl), Rahshan Ahmad (Crown City Rockers) and Spinobi (Ozomatli).

EM: Please describe how this album came into fruition?

This album is my heart and soul. I always wanted to challenge myself musically so I brought in several musicians to come and help me
add some ambiance and life to the samples and sounds. I began by repeating a layering process and removing certain samples.  I also sampled live instrumentation which took on a new life. I had some amazing vocalists come through and bless the music. But it all began with late night sessions, fresh from an airplane ride right back home to LA.

EM: How would you best describe this album?

LA is known for having a beat generation scene that is respected across the world. I wanted to make something a bit different with live chords, changes, switches, bridges.  I love what is going on in LA, but I wanted to add texture to my sound. I wanted it to resemble the streets and the people who roam the streets at 2 am.   I used to have a radio slot right after the club, so I while I was flying across town, I would get felt inspired. In this album, I wanted to document how I felt in my core- in my soul.

EM: Any collaborative efforts on this album you’d like to mention?

Yes!  Kissey Asplund is featured on a song we recorded which is a beautiful, melodic number. Another vocalist, Wendisue, who is a singer songwriter
based in LA, blows me away with her vocals. On the instrumental tip,  we have Itai Shapira (Elevaters) on bass and guitar, Shaunte Palmer on the trombone, Dexter Story (Life Force Trio/ Build An Ark) on guitars and last but not least, Evan Lasry on keys, bass, drums. In so many ways, all of these musicians really helped me with the album.

EM: Lastly, any hidden gems or places of recluse in either L.A. or S.F. that you’d like to share?

PST w/ my man Sake One- great place for music!  Every time I go there, I feel the love.  But my favorite place to zone out, is on the radio, Monday nights, midnight – 3 am on  KCRW.  I love to come in, turn down the lights break out the records and just guide a mood or ambiance across the airwaves.

You can tune in to Anthony Valadez every single Monday night live on 89.9FM and worldwide @ kcrw. He also holds down several DJ residencies in the Los Angeles area.

The DUBLAB Decade Finale Bash Downtown LA

The DUBLAB Decade Finale Bash Downtown LA

On Saturday night, the Dublab collective celebrated a decade of throwing the best DJ-based music events in the city by … throwing a party with a lot of DJs. Dublab closed a ten-day run of shows with a party downtown on Saturday at Edgar Varela Fine Arts.

What started first as an Internet radio station in 1999, those heady days when financiers with fat checkbooks were throwing money at little start-ups, gradually became something sturdy and solid as the collective learned to survive without relying on venture capital. You can see the community in Tim Norris’ photographs. (tragic disclosure: we were fighting the flu on Saturday night, and opted against infecting revelers with our germs; this is a second-hand account.)

Dublab has always been about electronic music, but never at the expense of history. The line-up at Dublab’s closing night party embraced producers, DJs and MCs who jumped across genres and sounds: Flying Lotus, Turquoise Wisdom, Ale, Frosty, Gaslamp Killer, J. Rocc and a dozen-odd others.

“There was ridiculous money going into Internet radio,” Mark “Frosty McNeill told writer Chris Martins last month, on the early days of Dublab. “We’d go to these companies for investment meetings and people would be partying midday. They would have, like, ‘Kegger Day’ every Thursday and ‘Early Day’ on Tuesdays. DJs were getting paid $60 an hour, plus money for buying records. I had a friend who had his MPC on his desk and he’d just be making beats at work. It was hard not to have delusions of grandeur, but you could see from a mile away it wasn’t gonna last.”

For longevitiy’s sake, maybe it’s just as well that Dublab was forced to make it on its own after the Internet money vanished. It taught them how to do it by themselves, how to build something to last, how to balance a budget.

The collective has created a self-sustaining engine by becoming a non-profit. It releases records, collaborates with kindred record labels for releases, shoots their popular “Vision Version” series of live performance videos — many on the roof of their studio above Little Temple in Silver Lake.

And they throw parties, of course. Some of the freest, most diverse, friendly, open-spirited events in LA. Happy Decade of Dublab. Here’s to ten more.

Back in the lab.  Evan cruised by the Venice Love Beach out and laid down some keys.  Then Novena came through and dropped possibly what might be me a collabo on a comedic album full of absolute hillarity.   Waiting till November 10th for the album to drop and in the mean time working on more music.

Last night was amazing! Hanging w/ Kutmah is always guaranteed laughs.  Good see Dru, GLK, Danny, Take and the rest of the Dublab collective at night.  Its usually hard for me to get to do these events w/ the residencies however I was able to make this one.  3 rooms, full of people just bobbin’ their heads to what ever I would drop on the turntable.  Always a good thing.

INTO INFININTY

About a year back Frosty hit me about this amazing installment incorporating visual art with loops contributed from all over the world. Known as the “Into Infinity” project,  I did a couple doodles and they were paralleled with sound loops that accompany the pics.  Only in the Dublab world cause such a project not only be projected but executed in such a great way!

Here is are my doodles.  Click the link to experience the sound + art.
