Routines have been helpful. Including getting sun, stretching, yoga and passion projects in the evening.
Woke up and had My Imagination on repeat..
RIP Phife Dawg + Mac Miller.
The Mayor kicked off a Lockdown effective tonight (March 20, 2020). I ran out to grab some take out and turned on the camera. Peacefulness was present. Streets were quiet. Day 5 of Quarantine.
I’m grateful to be playing records tonight at the Del Monte Speakeasy. And every Friday Friday night for that matter. I’ve been inside reading and spending more time with my pup but I do need to get out. I hope to see you tonight on the dance floor. No requests tho.
We are in uncertain times. Im reading more, more in-house work outs and dog walks but in the spurt of all this chaos, I find myself to be more creative. I want to shoot more.
Your timeline will convince you the end is near. But a walk on the beach and dolphin sighting will remind you of gratitude and presence.
Thanks to Christine Mai Nguyen for chance to talk about music discovery among other things. Peep her youtube channel tho! Muy fuego!
Looped is an audio & visual journey through the eyes of KCRW DJ Anthony Valadez. Explore the streets, beats and meet the people who make it happen.
Episode 1 takes us deep into the KCRW music library, with Anthony digging in the stacks to find his favorite records from the 90s. Watch!
Big thanks to Samsung + Jeff Compton for the feature in this new promo spot. Had a blast filming this! Also shout out Max McVeety + Smedley for the cameo! Watch here!
Played this new J Cole cut on my show last week and fell in love with it. Then I saw the video and bam! On repeat. I’m not the biggest J Cole fan but he really does surprise me with his delivery every time when you bypass the singles. Side note – Is it just me or does he channel Kendrick in the “I” vid?
The Funky President J Rocc swings through for a chat about his journey as a club dj in the OC and into the working man he is today. But then in came Peanut Butter Wolf to start the party and break down the history of the Ultimate Breaks and Beats series and it’s inspiration of sample/rap culture. Tales of digging, comic book store jobs and serving the homies at Mcdonalds are all told. You can also listen to J Rocc’s live KCRW set right here! And grab your tickets to Ultimate Breaks and Beats at The Echoplex to catch these guys in action w/ Biz Markie and Breakbeat Lou on Sunday November 23rd.
Here’s a brief behind the scenes visual recap of my weekly adventures w/ King Most. KM joins me this Wednesday night in K Town (LA) at the Line Hotel outside of Pot Bar! Hope you dig the video recap!
Good times w/ the mighty King Most, Max Macveety on drums + the Sayers/SLS Vegas crew last night. I’ll be back on the decks tonight w/ The Sessions. If you are around, come say hi!
Images, videos can best describe my past 24 hours. And it continues tonight! Swing through at the SLS in Vegas. I’ll be back behind the turntables. Would love to see you.
Just landed into LA and ready to bring the party to The Sayers Club in Hollywood tonight. Brian Collier (Lauryn Hill/Too Short) and Nick Suhr (K Flay) join me on drums and Dj Syrehn is on the turntables. Big love to King Most for holding down the duties last night.
Sometimes I truly can’t tell if I am a weirdo or a genius. You decide. Watch below! And follow me on Instagram!
Night One of our kick off at our weekly at the SLS Sayers Club in Vegas was quite the adventure. But the energy and madness during our performance was something else!!!! Big thanks to Jason Scoppa + the amazing staff at this unique and special venue! We were in the middle of the madness and I broke out the GOPRO and recorded a little something. The adventures continue Friday and just about every night! Swing through! Say hello!
New snapshots and video this Sunday’s jump off at Insert Coin(s). Just landed into LA and I need a serious nap! It was awesome meeting all the incredible folks who came out and got down with us. The Knocks rocked it. Big love to all the staff and dancers who got down! The dancers below were amazing and I had to break out the GoPro! Peep!
Traveling across the US this year and engaging with listeners of the weekly radio show has really taught me about the power of radio. I always mention that being on at midnight makes you wonder who is listening. But talking to folks and hearing that it kicks off their week on a positive note makes it all worth it. I have heard testimonials that have choked me up. I look forward every Monday night coming into the basement with a record bag full of music I love and connecting with listeners. Hope you might join me tonight at Midnight at 89.9 FM and worldwide at KCRW.com! Become a part of the family! Tune in!
Thanks to the folks at GOPRO for the cameras. I have been documenting my journey as a person who ends up in the most random places. This past week I was in New Mexico working on a new video for my new record in addition to playing out across LA. I wanted to capture some of that magic in a new series of Vlogs. Big up to Monday night KCRW favorite Sly5thAve for the music!
Big thanks to GoPro of amazing Hero3 camera! I have had a blast documenting a lot of what a week in my life may look like! From all my residencies at Cana, Zanzibar, The Natural History Museum, Sayers and inside KCRW, it’s documented in the video below. Still trying to master the settings but this thing is totally fun! I also love how you can view the footage from you smartphone! I’ll be posting more footage from my adventures and especially at SXSW! We are going to shoot a video for A Million Billion Dying Suns!
New video for “On My Mind” which is out now on I Tunes as an EP on Plug Research. This one features Jason Joseph on vox and also shot by JJ in India. Get the EP NOW!
It’s out! This project took months and months to make but it was also the easiest project to created with Nick Rosen. This project began as I started work on my second album for Plug Research and I would have these incredible sessions with Nick. We would record 2-3 songs a day then we would have downtime. We began starting songs from scratch, go grab coffee, return and hit record. Sometimes we would take a dip in the pacific in between takes. We were under the assumption this might be a great project to release ourselves so we would record with no rules, no structure and no idea where this might land. We involved our friends Derek Taylor (drums and percussions) and Jason Joseph (rhodes) to contribute and slowly the songs began to take form. I took off for a week to NY and I began capturing these sounds with my I phone from Subways, art exhibitions in the Bowery and chopping them up and placing them through out the EP. A week later Hurricane Sandy would strike these very locations and I wondered what has become of these places. LOS GIRLS also became a visual project with the help of Kim and Xochil. We would all wander the streets of East LA and just capture things happening! Life in the process with the LOS GIRLS music as a bed. We hope you dig!
I had the pleasure of watching this man record some sessions one day with The Park. The way I shoot is I just simply feel out the artist’s energy, vibe and hit record. Sometimes I don’t. Derek said “just shoot” but I was never sure if Darondo was down for a camera in his face. Darondo became more welcoming with his one liners and laugh. Every laugh exposed a few missing teeth but a warm and loving heart. I just found out Darondo passed and it made me want to unearth this session. Every time D opened his mouth it was Church mixed with that 9th grade heart break. He will be missed.
Rainy Milo was all over my radio show last year with the release of hey EP. It’s good to hear new music followed by a music video for the track “Bankrobber“. Not her strongest track but I’ll take it. “Black And Blonde” drops later in the month!
One of my favorite bands is bringing their families into the fold. Inspiring video in which members of New Zealand’s Electric Wire Hustle perform with family members.
Just got this link the other night from the man himself. After sharing his last video the feedback on the blog has been incredible! Lots of likes on it. Bird, who hails from Toronto, actually got in touch with me and we have been chatting. Technology is an amazing thing. Here he is with his new video for Crazy. You can also download the song here. Let me know what you think! I’ll be playing it on my show tonight on KCRW! Make sure to tune in!
Wait! And how brilliant is this video? How catchy is this hook?! Definitely one to look for in 2013!
Forgot I had this little nugget in my laptop. Just uploaded it to the blog.
Our last minute/secret show off the Boardwalk in Venice California. Fans were notified 10 minutes before the performance and were given secret wrist bands to enter the must see show of 2013. The band consisted of Miles Bonny on vocals and horn, Nick Rosen on percussion, Anthony Valadez on tambourine and Smedley the Frenchie providing the good energy.
Good times at Lis-Uh-N last night. Managed to grab a quick bite with friends at Umami Burger then warm things up on the turntables. Lots of special friends in the building. My friend Yash shot some great video while I was up playing something a little different and special. The new Kwabs is the first track which is really cool and mellow followed by a Waajeed beat. Anyways, further proof we like to experiment with sounds on Wednesday nights. And a big thanks to Jeremy Sole for getting down with us before having to head to the basement for his show. Lots of fun! Until next week!
These past 2 nights have turned into dance parties while asking for your support during Raul Campo’s show. Some of you didnt believe the picture that went out on Instragram Thursday night so I thought I’d film it. Peep the video below. Big love to everyone who has pledged support to one of my favorite institutions for music, art and culture! KCRW has become this cultural hub that is not only vital in LA but around the world via KCRW.com.
And also a big thank you to all the volunteers who came out on a Friday night and helped us out! I don’t just show these sexy dance moves to anyone! Hope you enjoy my dance video and please make sure to support!
Meet Evan (Who’s last name I cant spell). He has played keys on my last 2 albums and cracks me up every time during downtime. Im working on a new album and I kept the camera rolling as I hit record. Some of you might get it, others might not. Enjoy the short clip!
So honored to be a part of this Grammy campaign alongside Snoop Dog, Nas, Kaskade, Taylor Swift and friends! Peep the video!
Saturday nights at Sayers is where folks either end up in the air, thrashing into the drum kit, hanging from some elevated place, on the dance floor, head bobbing on the couch or on the deck. Last night we managed to witness 2 out of the previously mentioned. Derek Taylor and I raged through the soundsystem last night inside one of LA’s mysterious and fun spots hidden on the corner of Hollywood and Wilcox. Watching folks faces the second they step into this home of musical wizardry is priceless! I had a lot of fun!
Tonight! Our first 2012 session of the year and Im super excited to be back at my second home on the west side. Last was we ended on such a high note. Feeling super inspired, KG Superstar and I hopped the fence across the street and skated across the ice rink in our kicks. Anyhoo, Tonight we proceed to give you what you need at Zanzibar. Drop me a line for guest list love, I confirm and you my friend are good to go! It’s that easy. I’ll be on the turntables all night long so make sure to slap me an 80’s high five!

Last night was fun! Before heading over to KCRW’s Apogee session with Jose James I stopped by The Park’s rehearsal with UK Songstress Alice Russell for a nice live preview of her upcoming release on Tru Thoughts. I am in love with the few songs that I got to hear! Possibly one of my favorite moments is the Burrito Freestyle towards the end of the video below with Ms. Russell on the drums. If you are in LA tonight (18 December 2012) swing on through to the Del Monte off Windward for a live taste of Alice and the gang. The Park and yours truly opening up on the turntables. Who knows, maybe they might break into the Burrito Freestyle tonight!? In the mean time peep the video below and some stills.
Folks got super wild this past Saturday night. Sometimes Im at a loss of words hence why I just turn on the camera and let it speak for itself.
This was shot and recorded last week on the final day of the Hiatus Kaiyote meet and greet tour. Last week Gilles Peterson of UK’s Radio 1 picked Tawk Tomahawk as his album of the week. Just prior Pharaoh Monch and Jean Grae raved about HK. Enjoy this sit down I had with vocalist Nai Palm as we talk about the band and what it’s like to be loved by Erykah Badu, The Roots, Dirty Projectors and Animal Collective.
Im also excited that Nai Palm has hand selected a set of records for me to play showcasing the sounds of Australia tonight and as an added bonus, a listen to the new joint she and Taylor Mcferrin have been working on. Tune in tonight at Midnight (PST) on 89.9 FM and worldwide at KCRW.com

And another fun rowdy night at Sayers this past Saturday night. Derek Taylor stepped behind the drum kit and got down while I held down the turntables. Great energy, folks and vibe. Hope you dig!
