Lots of new releases and finds in 2020 and only 14 days in. Don’t forget to follow my weekly Sonic Safari spotify playlists or keep tabs on my recent KCRW sets. In the mean time, here are a few stand outs found this week. More to come!

SONNY MILES

Just got hip to this creative out of North Carolina. Here’s a taste of Bedroom Hollywood. The minute I hit play on “The Kids” I got the shivers on my skin. Solid

DEVON GILFILLIAN

Hailing out of Philly, this no over night success has been putting in work. Just popped up on my radar with his latest release titled Black Hole Rainbow which is produced from by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes/The War On Drugs).  It’s gritty, loose and feel good soul. The minute you hear Devon’s voice, you know you hit something special.

MARCOS VALLE

This iconic Brazilian singer/songwriter/producer has been in the game for over 50 years and at the age of 76 just released Cinzento which exemplifies his timeless ear for soulful sonics.

Devin Morrison

I got to build with Devin Morrison last year and had no idea of his adventures and living in Japan. Recently featured on the recent Phonte solo album, I’m happy to see him continuing his journey and building his sound. Casper definitely sounds out of the box unable to label. I dig! And the layering of these harmonies!!

Mac Miller

This Thursday, Jan 17th is the release for Circles. The completed album by Jon Brion and a considered companion piece to Swimming.  I got tired of trying to convince folks who thought they had Mac figured out as another rapper. I mentioned his work with Thundercat, Fly Lo, Bilal + Little Dragon. I mentioned his ability to write actual songs with chord changes. I mentioned his ability to be a multi instrumentalist. This song is everything I tried to tell them.  And this video tho.

Honorable mention: STRETCH AND BOBBITO

I mean, two of the biggest music lovers I know working with a full band (The M19’s) and covering some of the classics with heart and soul? C’mon!
