Brooklyn by way of Austin composer/producer swings through and talks about touring with Prince, jazz inspirations and the process behind his current 7′ inch compositions that are a dj’s true secret weapon. His reworkings of Kendrick Lamar’s “Kill My Vibe” and Bruno Mar’s “Uptown Funk” are horns galore with a touch not too many can pull of.

Brooklyn’s very own joins me for a very candid talk regarding where to eat in their local neighborhood, tour life and the joy of sleeping on different beds in different cities. Von Pea and Donwill break it all down as they prep for their current tour which kicked off with a farewell celebration at The Line Hotel during one of my dj nights. This was after we killed the Galbi, Kush Salad, Spicy Pork and fish. S/O to the entire staff at Line, Pot and all the friends that came out and chopped it up with us!

Fresh off the heels of his brand new release entitled Early RiserTaylor Mcferrin breaks down his creative process and discusses his life and influences in music. He also breaks down what it’s like to team up with LA’s Brainfeeder label during recording and touring across the world. We also touch on the impact and loss of Austin Peralta. Make sure to pick up his new album! It’s on rotation Monday nights on KCRW and also I had to mention it on my latest session on WBUR’s Here And Now. Go grab that album! Hope you dig the chat!

What happens when Cincinnati and Brooklyn team up? You get something pure and organic. We saw it with Reflection Eternal and then we saw it repeat with Tanya Morgan. Founded in 2003 via the message boards of Okayplayer, the squad continues to push something different in today’s musical landscape. I had the pleasure of watching them last year at CMJ rock Free Candy in Brooklyn and that performance reminded me of how much I love this group. This turned out to be a great chat with the two who both open up about the challenges of doing what they do.

Deme_-feat.-Denitia

Monday night KCRW favorites Sly5thAve and Denitia strike gold with this track. Horns, keys, chill vocals and jazz drum patterns all blend for this track of the day! I need this track in my life every day just in case soundcloud crashes or goes bankrupt! Forthcoming full length entitled Akuma is on the way with a drop on Feb 11th.

Last night in Brooklyn was incredible! This whole trip was incredible. It was great to see soo many friends from all over the world come out and get down with us! The jump off at FREE CANDY was something. Big big big love to all the folks at Redbull Sound Select // Move Forward Music and Plug Research for making this event happen.  ALL the acts were incredible and different from one another. I got to see my faves Tanya Morgan and Amp Live but got introduced to the sounds of Rat King, Pegasus WarningYC the Cynic, Wavy Spice, The Ton Tons, Emily Bell. Myth Sizer and his crew got the crowd moving and it was nice to finally meet and enjoy Denitia and Sene in the flesh!  And a big shout out to Wavy Spice the Versace Hottie for her flows! She knows how to work a crowd.

On another note, I am humbled by the amazing turn out of friends who came out and I got to see. Brooklyn really showed love and it was an honor to get the crowd moving through out the night.  It was also great to meet so many listeners of my radio show and fans of my blog as well. Sometimes when Im in the basement I really have no clue as to who is listening but after last night It’s very evident NYC is all ears!  Big love!  Until next time….

I knew Jeedo was in town so I had to grab him and his new project Tiny Hearts for a chat about this brilliant new project featuring Tim K and Dede. One of the magical moments for me to witness was hearing the three vibe off each other while I simply stood back and narrated. There was lots of energy and hearing the three talk about the creation process was informative. You get a sense the three are on a creative high and really really enjoy working with each other. Listen to the chat and go buy the EP! Links are below.  I hope you enjoy this week’s chat w/ Tiny Hearts.

When I first heard Lips I fell in love. “Everything To Me” was the track that grabbed my attention. Lush melodies and strings with a voice that locked me in. I needed to know who was creating these sounds. Lips are originally from New Zealand and now hail in Brooklyn.  Recently they dropped a nice cover of Frank Ocean’s Super Rich Kids which I posted on my latest KCRW show and  also on my latest mix.

I am excited to announce that the band has passed me a super exclusive of their latest gem which you might know from a hot soundtrack!  This Monday I’ll play this gem in the first hour of the show.  So tune in this Monday for the latest Lips gem and if your curious about the band go to their bandcamp page and go explore some more sonic goods!  Listen to more of their tunes here.

I shot this while getting lost around the L.E.S and Brooklyn. It was nice to get away from the usual visuals in Los Angeles and put my boots to the pavement and capture what I saw. This is the wrap up video.  Hope you enjoy!
