LOS ANGELES—Celebrating the widely acclaimed new exhibition Gary Baseman: The Door Is Always Open, the Skirball Cultural Center hosts an after-dark party, Into the Night: Secrets and Truth, on Friday, July 12, kicking off at 9:00 p.m.
Headlining the evening is Hunter Hunted, known for their intricate vocal harmonies and voluminous, soaring melodies that toe the line between California indie and alternative rock. Just off an East Coast tour with Fitz and the Tantrums, the band, noted as up-and-coming by outlets such as KCRW, MTV, Billboard, and Nylon magazine, will perform songs from their new self-titled EP in the Skirball’s spectacular outdoor courtyard.

Also on the bill is another local favorite, Harriet, who have recently completed a Monday night residency at The Echo. In advance of their highly anticipated full-length debut, the band takes the stage with their unique mix of classic Americana and the sonic experimentation of electronic music.

The evening also includes an appearance by Gary Baseman himself as well as a special art performance created exclusively for the event by Baseman and choreographer Sarah Elgart. The performance features some of Baseman’s most popular characters such as Toby, the Princess of Secrets, and the Seven Sacred Magi, and involves interactive engagement with audience members, many of whom may go home with exclusive performance keepsakes.

KCRW host, producer/DJ, and visual artist Anthony Valadez emcees, spinning the best of yesterday and tomorrow before and between the bands’ sets and closing out the party at 1:00 a.m.

Concertgoers can also enjoy after-hours access to Gary Baseman: The Door Is Always Open, described as “eye-popping” by Los Angeles magazine and “a visual banquet” by the Examiner, as well as art making, signature cocktails, and screenings of the cult favorite animated film Fantastic Planet.

Into the Night: Secrets and Truth continues the Skirball’s successful late-night series, which saw popular indie bands Sea Wolf and Geographer pack the house last summer. On August 30, seven weeks following Into the Night: Secrets and Truth, music fans will again be treated to late-night fun and games when more indie artists take the stage for Into the Night: The Wild Side.
