Legendary LA artist Mear One stopped by KCRW to record a set for the Guest Dj Project. Ever since I was a kid taking the bus from North Hollywood to Melrose I would see his tags all over the place. Walls, Heavens, bus stops and the whole 9!  This is one of my favorite sets I have done and really enjoyed Mear’s insights into his song selections. Take a listen!  Hope you dig!

1.  Frank Zappa — Trouble Every Day
2.  Grandmaster Flash — The Message
3.  Myka 9 / Freestyle Fellowship — Park Bench People
4.  Gaslamp Killer (feat. Daedalus) – Impulse
5.  Blackbird—Homecoming

Street artist Mear One is an LA native and digs into his roots in his Guest DJ set. Whether discovering his rebellious side via Frank Zappa or relating to the “hood” stories of Grandmaster Flash, music has played a major role in his art and his life. KCRW will be hosting a screening of the iconic graffiti doc Style Wars on July 28 featuring live art by Mear One.  Find out more at www.kcrw.com/stylewars

I love recording these KCRW Guest Dj projects. Sometimes I sit there with these amazing and talented folks and talk music. I can’t think of anything else I would rather do.  From architects to actors, comedians to community artists, it never gets old.  A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of sitting with funny man Nick Offerman of NBC’s Park And Recreations. We discuss songs that have inspired him over the years as part of the Guest Dj Project. Hope you enjoy!  Click here to listen!

1. How’m I Doin’? Hey Hey! – Mills Brothers
2. Lucky Day – Tom Waits
3. Thrasher – Neil Young
4. Danny Boy – Megan Mullally
5. Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door – Bob Dylan

I first caught glimpse of Reggie Watts as part of Maktub. I opened for these guys way back in the early 00’s.  Check out his brilliant ability to remix and recreate our various ways of communication.  Reggie tackles comedy but incorporates music and beatboxing to create a “what am I watching cause I love it” kind of sensation.  Earlier this year I got to sit down with Reggie and talk about the 5 songs that have inspired him over the years as part of KCRW’s Guest Dj Project.  My highlight is when we both beatboxed and recreated Tears For FearsEverybody Wants To Rule The World“.  Listen to it here and check out Reggie’s amazing TED talk.
