This week’s guest on the podcast is illustrator, designer, street culture curator and all around bun celebrity Sophia Chang. Yes, it’s round two as we check in with Sophia and talk about her adjustment from NY to LA Life as well as her work ethics in balancing all these projects. She’s a bundle of joy and positive energy. Hope you dig!

Stay connected to Sophia Chang’s work!

I first got hip to Sophia Chang via her amazing site. Having played with photoshop I often wondered how she was able to do these amazing illustrations of rappers and NY figures. I then got hip to her work with Staple Design and had been bugging her for a while about being on my podcast. Since then she has been curating projects, featured on Hypebeast and has a project in the works with Puma!  This was a great conversation that included what it’s like to design for the NBA and still have your parents ask “When are you going to get a real job?”. Hope you dig this chat!

Got to sit in with Gary Baseman and talk about music that has inspired his work over the years as part of KCRW’s Guest Dj Project which is set to air soon as he gets ready for his exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center. We talked about the songs that have him develop his artistic voice and I must say, I walked way really impressed and also moved about his personal stories.  Big thanks to Gary for also bringing in treats and also letting me delve into his art book.  This brother has some amazing stories behind each character as well as some that reflect to personal family tales that left us all deeply moved. He is a great example of an artist who utilizes his work to reflect his search and understanding of life.  One of the things I loved is his acceptance of failure. Failure to make things work, to make a relationship work. There is beauty in temporary and in the way we see things after our expectations are not met.  I’ll post the Guest Dj project once it airs and also make sure to check out what looks like an amazing exhibit at the Skirball. More information can be found here.

I am a huge font/design appreciator. I spend way too much time checking out new fonts and design work to draw inspiration from in my music and my art. I am also a fan of NY life. The pace, the artists the freaking Knicks (especially when they had Ewing) and the hustle of young artists, musicians and film makers there today.  When I first stumbled on Sophia Chang’s art, it featured NY artists, hustlers and shakers. But the best part was that it was captured in her ability to rework the images into illustration. Check out more of her design work here.  Hypebeast spent a day with the illustrator. Check out her daily hustle.

Mike Perry is one of my favorite illustrators.  Not only is he about art but also about bringing the community together for the greater good. This video is inspiring!  You can kind of tell Mike was one of those kids who constantly doodled as a young one.
