Ammon Contact
Azymuth – Aurora (4 Hero Remix)

Omid is one of my first guest’s that I had on back when I had a radio show over at KCSN in 03. 12 years later we bring it in full circle and he’s still hard at work with his recent release entitled “Modern Persian Speech Sounds” which I play on my KCRW show. But one of the other reasons I wanted to bring in Omid on the podcast was for him to share his knowledge of Los Angeles’s musical landscape dating back to the late 90’s.

He too was a kid who loved taping radio programs including Michael Mixxin Moor, Mike Nardone and Rob One of the Fly ID show. We also speaks fondly of his days venturing to The Good Life and Project Blowed. He also speaks of his role as Music Supervisor on the recent Good Life documentary which was directed by Ava DuVernay. And little did I know she was an emcee at The Good Life!

** Also as a bonus, Omid crafts a special mix for this episode which includes some unreleased material as well as personal favorites. And it’s got some heaters! Im super proud of this episode! Also make sure to stay up to date with his work via his souncloud page.  Hope you enjoy this week’s episode!

There is no real way to describe this man’s music other than to insert the words “genuine, authentic and talent” into the fold. Maybe even genius! I got hip to a Mocky cut and then my pal Nick Rosen connected me with him and the rest is history. While prepping for this podcast I downloaded a bunch of older tracks of his and was just amazed at the various directions this man can go. He has a new “Mocktape” set to drop on the 17th and I encourage you to grab it when it drops. It should be noted, today’s guest co-host is Nick Rosen who is also my bandmate in our side project entitled Los Girls. Mocky brought along the very talented and amazing Joey Dosik for a live performance with all 3 on various instruments. Hope you enjoy! This one was super fun + totally in the moment magical.

Since 2009 this band has had my attention. With the release of their self titled debut, Electric Wire Hustle had held my attention. I still pop in that record which stands against the test of time and hits hard. Fast forward to 2014 where Mara TK and Tay drop Love Can Prevail which instantly sounds nothing like the debut but in a very good way. It’s a new sound and a new direction with that timeless soul that only EWH can execute.

The band dropped by the HQ and dropped knowledge on the creative process as well as paying homage and giving love the source of their sound stateside. We were in absolute post party mode and the vibe was just ride and a full on celebration. Hope you enjoy!

Fresh off the heels of his brand new release entitled Early RiserTaylor Mcferrin breaks down his creative process and discusses his life and influences in music. He also breaks down what it’s like to team up with LA’s Brainfeeder label during recording and touring across the world. We also touch on the impact and loss of Austin Peralta. Make sure to pick up his new album! It’s on rotation Monday nights on KCRW and also I had to mention it on my latest session on WBUR’s Here And Now. Go grab that album! Hope you dig the chat!

Big thanks to RedBull Studios in NYC!

Excited to open for the amazing Alfredo Rodriguez Trio! I heard his amazing on NPR of leaving Cuba and wanting to link with Quincy Jones. It became his dream. (Listen to the story here)  And somehow, someway it happened. Quincy also produced his debut release and now ART have a new release set to drop! I’ll be on the turntables opening for this amazing talent! Hope to see you there!

Made the trek out to New Mexico and linked up with producer GB. I have been a fan of his work since his Soundtrack for Sunrise release on Sound In Color in late 2004. At the time I was doing radio over at KCSN and was a resident at Templebar. This was pre social media and more of a word of mouth era.  What made GB stand out was the maturity of his sound and also there was truly nothing like it  coming out of LA from anyone his age.  It was timeless but seemed to be crafted from the hands of an elder who appreciated the past ad blended with the future. Big thanks to GB for welcoming me into his home and sharing knowledge. Hope you dig!

Thanks to the folks at GOPRO for the cameras. I have been documenting my journey as a person who ends up in the most random places. This past week I was in New Mexico working on a new video for my new record in addition to playing out across LA. I wanted to capture some of that magic in a new series of Vlogs. Big up to Monday night KCRW favorite Sly5thAve for the music!

I came across this band one day and was instantly drawn to their sound. I found a link to their music and was like “what is this?”. The link contained auto insurance skits, brilliant songs and beats. It was a journey. I could sense this talented duo simply just had a great sense of humor. The minute they stepped into the basement for this chat it was all laughs and it began to make sense. The two met at a wedding and.. well.. Just listen for absolute hilarity.  Hope you dig this week’s chat! I did! Make sure to check out more of their sounds or follow em on twitter.

Get hipped Skin Town. They have a new album that just dropped today on Time No Place and I highly suggest folks pick up this album. Saw them once live and was instantly hooked. They have been on rotation on my radio show for the past few weeks. Nick has played with Zola Jesus and Grace was into booty bounce bay area classics and some how they have managed to create some great sounds that mix soul with Nintendo/Genesis synth sounds. Get to know them. Hope you enjoy.  And peep their soundcloud!

You can listen to my previous podcasts here.

Oh lord my body is exhausted! Fun night at the Fonda tonight for the kick off of three consecutive nights featuring Moby playing music from his latest release entitled Innocents. I got to warm up the crowd with some records before his first set and managed to slip in some Banks, Kaytranada, Modeselektor and some other mellowness before doing a second set filled with more uptempo favorites. Moby rocked with his first set performing his latest album and followed with a second set of all classics and favorites. It was personally amazing to see and witness this man re-create the soundtrack of my younger years.

Finally grabbed Thurz aka Thurzday in the lab for a one on one. We discussed the process of the soundtrack of his life which will include his forthcoming project entitled Blood On The Canvas. Thurz first grabbed my attention as 1/2 of U-N-I which captured and reignited the buzz of the LA underground. We also discuss his inspiration for his last album entitled LA Riot. Thurz drops knowledge on the importance of communication with one another as well his experiences with working w/ Black Thought, Strong Arm Steady, BJ The Chicago Kid and friends. I found this chat to be very insightful in understanding his development as an artist and is existence as a young man growing up in Inglewood. Enjoy the chat and follow him on Twitter or stay posted to his soundcloud page for more goods!   Hope you dig!

Thank you LA! 30 years of celebrating Style Wars KCRW style complete with the assistance of Mear One, Risk One, Dcypher, Hit+Run, the staff at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science and Pam/Taryn/Brian at the events dept at the station!  Big thanks to Mear who went beyond the call of duty in making this as authentic as possible!   Big love to The Next Ones for the b boying.  It was an honor to discuss the film with the co-director Henry Chalfant who broke down the science and of creating such a film. SKEEM One was also in the house talking about how his views on graff have not changed much. He has one of the most memorable scenes in the movie as well as quotables. Catherine Keener was in the house as well and discussed the work involved in the restoration of the doc. She mentioned the Beastie Boys were hard at work giving a hand to the doc.  I had a blast observing LA come together on such a wonderful Summer day!   Big thanks to everyone again!

All Ears is a documentary focusing on the Los Angeles instrumental Beat scene.

The L.A. community is often cited as the epicenter and origin of a worldwide movement and the documentary offers an insight into the open minds and ears of the producers behind the beats (dak, Ras G, Sacred, Kutmah, Dibia$e, House Shoes, DJ Nobody & many more).

All Ears looks at the network of record labels, collectives and events that have formed a united community continually growing and diversifying by the day. Madlib and the late J Dilla are the two most notable influences whose great impact is heavily reflected upon within the documentary.

“The last 10-20 years has been the age of the emcee, now it’s the era of the producer. Like Q-Tip said everything moves in cycles.”- Computer Jay

I just got hipped to Gregory Bojorquez photography while checking out some books in Echo Park this weekend and had to look up his work. Capturing life in LA from the cholos to stippers.  Bojorquez has the ability to document such powerful moments in the lives of those in the inner cities. Peep some of his work below.

Last year I went into the city with the camera and discovered CicLAvia, a tradition started in Bogota Columbia over 30 years ago. I was really amazed at how the LA and bike community came together on a Sunday and just rode a stretch of LA streets. It was tranquil and peaceful. This year Im excited to partner up with LA’s Grand Park and creating some more excitement as myself and Jeremy Sole hold down turntable duties alongside some live music from Love In The Circus and Ozo Kids.  This is free to community!  I’ll bring my camera so stop by and strike a pose!  Hope to see you!

More info here.
