Here we go! My TOP 10 ALBUMS OF 2014. Always a tough list to compile being I’m not fond of Top anything lists. My views always change and then I end up regretting or forgetting a title. An example being Liam Bailey’s Definitely Now album, which should have easily been in my Top 3. No question. But Im sitting in the airport and figured I have some time to do my annual justification of each record. Okay. Live from Terminal 1 Gate 11. Lets do this! Your feedback is welcomed! @AnthonyValadez.

Nick Hakim – Where Will We Go (Pt 1 and 2)
Okay, easily a cheater, 2 EP’s formed into an album. I had Nick Hakim on my podcast and we talked about this coming out at a full LP so technically this isn’t cheating. Maybe I am a bit biased being that I spent way too much time at dog parks and dealing with a few changes and these two EP’s where there and hit me in a way that music has not in a few years. It’s a journey with instrumentation on point. Nick’s voice is also a notable stand out that compliments the chords and guitar licks.

Fatima – Yellow Memories
Do Better was the first cut that hip to this record by blog darling Fatima. Fatima has been on my radar thanks in part to the UK support via radio and blog postings. But it was finally nice to hear a full LP from her in addition to remixes and singles. The album allowed the songstress to shine and show her depth from the villa-esque “Technology” to the playful “Biggest Joke Of All

Majid Jordan- A Place Like This
Another EP cheater. But hey! It’s so good! I mentioned these guys at the start of 2014 on WBUR’s Here And Now and was hoping that at some point the duo would get some stateside love. Still too early to tell but they rose to fame as featured on Drakes “Hold On, We’re Going Home“.  It’s dark, soulful but the beats and sample flips are so on point!

Oceaan – The Oceaan EP/The Grip
Following in the same steps as Majid Jordan w/ a twist of electronic blips, samples and chaos is Manchester’s Oceaan! Big thanks to Blah Blah Blah Science for passing me his work early on. Oceaan’s sounds at times become a little messy and somehow it’s perfectly mixed and easy on the ears. Think of a plane with massive turbulence then out of nowhere, easy sailing with a perfect landing. But not all tracks are this chaotic. Oceaan pieces it all together with his sultry falsetto. Peep below!

Les Sins – Michael
I’m biased. Anything Toro Y Moi related gets automatic antvala love. But lets clear, Im also objective and really not that fond of putting an ably of 4 on the floor albums on this list. I can only tolerate so many minutes of boom boom boom boom before Im like “next”. Chaz Bundick aka Toro aka Les Sins masterfully adds the right amount of “umph” and synths to make it all work.  But the track’s stand out single “Why” has been in my head nonstop upon first listening. And still my jam!

Silk Rhodes – Silk Rhodes
You know an amazing song based on if you can remember where you were when you first heard it. I can still recall getting this cut from PB Wolf and just hitting repeat about 19 times. When I heard the rest of the album not really sure of what to expect, well, it was a wrap! Musically all over the place. I dig that about this band!  And how amazing is this video below?

Daedelus – The Light Brigade
When Daedelus drops a records I’m not sure if it’s going to be an electronic record that explores various bpm’s and time signatures. But being a fan of his work as “The Long Lost” it’s nice to hear him return to guitar driven ballads and the mellow mind state wit this album!

Dilated Peoples – Directors Of Photography
Having taken some time off with their own adventures, it was nice to see the super trio regroup for a releases on indie Rhymesayers. Dilated continued right where they left off. Content on point and the packaging was simply creative and well put together. If you have listened to my show or even live sets, odds are you might have heard “Let Your Thought’s Fly Away” somewhere tucked into the mix.

Clap! Clap! – Tayi Bebba
Italian band “Clap! Clap! drop crazy dance floor heat, samples, in your face drums and bass on this. Just when you think you have this group figured out, in comes the slow melodies and ethnic chants that makes you think “is this a world album?” Clap! Clap! challenges me as a listener with this record.

Meshell Ndegeocello – Comet, Come to Me
Anything this woman drops is always music to my ears! Well, not everything but 90% of what she drops is flawless. Maybe 95%? Another example of an artist that you as a listener are never really sure of what you might get. This album is a bit of a return to “Bitter” and a few other recent releases. And how awesome is that Whodini cover of “Friends?”

MESHELL

I am honored once again to introduce the amazing Meshell N’Degeocello as she performs songs off her latest album entitled Comet, Come To Me. 13 songs that once again explore every human emotion possible in one’s lifetime in a matter 45 minutes. What stands out on this album is the instrumentation which continues right where she left off on her last album Weather. The grooves become more solid and Meshell takes control of this album with her lyrics and smooth bass delivery. If you don’t have this album, go grab it! If you have it and are in LA on the 21st of September then I expect to see you at the El Rey! Grab tickets here!

Dexter Story just about does it all. If you have seen live music anywhere in Los Angeles during the past 10 years, chances are you have seen him on stage playing bass, guitar or drums. I met Dexter while recording a session for Ammon Contact roughly 9 years ago. I instantly gravitated towards his positive energy and ability to access situations with a can do attitute. I know this sounds like a letter of reference but once you listen I think you will understand what It is I am talking about.  I later learned Dex also worked product management for some big releases as well as artist management. He is a friend, father and great guy. I’m sure his energy will travel from this soundcloud link and into your heart. Hope you enjoy this episode!

Follow Dex on twitter at @DexterStory for great updates and insight.

Last night was exactly what I needed. In a week of debate on race, law, legislation, woman’s rights and budget talks I have to say it was nice to turn off the tv and head to the beach to hear Meshell. Ever since college I could count on her music to help me just sit and vibe with my self. Her latest album draws inspiration and is a tribute to the late Nina Simone. Nina’s spirit was in the air last night on the Santa Monica Pier. These songs put me at peace and as I would look out at the crowd I could see I was not the only one.  It was an honor to host this event and bring Meshell out.  Big love to the Twilight Concert Series for making these free concerts happen for the community.

One of my best investments is my camera. Life is short. I often wonder what my seeds might think when they look back at this blog. Im not really sure I keep a blog. Sure I love art, culture, changing tides in fashion and music but this is more than that.  This is a documentation of time and space. From everything I play on the radio to being allowed to have the freedom to do the things that I wish to do (i.e interviews, mixes, chats) and just capturing all that surrounds me.  It allows me to do things my way.  It’s not always the best way but its my creative hub to do the things that I feel get pushed aside.

When I look at these pics I am reminded of folks who took art into a direction that made them content at that time. I was in the right place at the right time to snap these shots of them in a certain place and they were okay with that. The trust between an artist and person with a camera is sacred.  I am grateful to be able to capture these musical movements with a radio show and a camera but I prefer to be on the front lines with camera in two, microphone on and ready to record.  I love to be in that space of creation. Being able to document it with a camera is exciting!  I encourage you to create your blog! Capture whats around you. Create a podcast!  Enjoy these snapshots! Let me know what you think!

I hate these things. Especially when 2012 was a year of great albums! And most importantly, what generates a great album of the year? I base it on wether it that album can stand the test of time. Can I listen to it over and over? In the gym? In the car? At home? In the headphones? Does it move me? Does it sonically fit into what I might enjoy? I’ve had the pleasure of sitting in the car for various long drives and flights and have enjoyed these albums through out the test of time.

Not only was this past year an amazing year for music but a great year for self releases. 3 of the albums below were self releases. While a couple others were released on smaller labels. Im also happy to see the big label releases put out something strong and new.  Im kinda kicking myself in the ass by leaving out other amazing album such as releases from Michael Kiwanuka, The XX, Poolside, Robert GlasperZulu Guru and Domenico and many others, but these are the 10 stand out’s with out any doubts. Let me know yours!  I hope you dig!

10.

Quantic w/ Alice Russell – Look Around The Corner
I remember Bobbito Garcia telling me how the title track was in constant rotation in his head. He was right. I can’t tell you how many times this song remained in my head. I’ll Keep My Light In My Window was the song that sealed it for me. I think this track remained in rotation for almost a month on my radio show. Quantic always tends to lay down vintage instrumentation true to authentic sound, but with Alice Russell on vocals it becomes something special and timeless. Listen to her guest dj set here from a few years back!

9.

Rainy Milo – Limey
It might be an EP but it stands out among the many releases of 2012. Im looking forward to hearing more from this London vocalist. Limey captures a certain vibe with mellow vibes. I was hoping for somewhere on this EP to pick up the pace but in retrospect I realized that each song blends into the next and continues the tone. And Rainy Milo’s voice is something different and new!  Here is a taste!

8.

XXYYXX – XXYYXX
From the States with oversea’s flavor from a 17 year old. About You is one of my top songs of 2012 coming in at about 40-50 bpm’s a minute.  It’s a clean electronic record that explore’s various time beat structures and sounds. Watch this incredible video directed by Vash for About You.

7.

Me’shell Ndegeocello – Pur Une Ame Souveraine – A Dedication To Nina Simone
Sure you might think I am biased with Me’shell. After Bitter, Comfort Woman and The World Has Made Me Into The Man Of My Dreams and Weather, I really could not tell what direction Me’shell might head into.  But a series of Nina Simone cover’s and renditions feels right. Me’shell reworks these songs with her flavor. When I first heard Feelin Good I instantly put this song on repeat. It was haunting, moving and just hit me like a rock.

6.

Cody ChesnuTT – Landing On A Hundred
I never thought I would hear a well produced and high end quality Cody record, then again I never thought I’d hear another Cody record in general. Stand out tracks like What Kind Of Cool (Will We Think Of Next) continue on the conscience narrative where Cody left off with this 2002 debut.  But Chip Down (In No Landfill) is hands down my favorite song of 2012!

5.

Frank Ocean – Channel Orange
I had the pleasure of sitting in a studio with Chris Douridas and Frank Ocean listening to this album from start to finish. I remember everyone in the room being speechless. I live tweeted the listening with tons of quotable from the young singer/songwriter. Songs like Pyramids and Crack Rock instantly struck me. It’s an impressive and mature sounding record complete with interludes that take you on a journey.

4.

Flying Lotus – Until The Quiet Comes
Fly Lo continues to explore time signatures and the marriage between beats and live instrumentation like no one’s business.  I could hit track 1 and let it play on repeat and enjoy the looped journey.  UTQC shows Fly Lo’s growth and fearless path of going into new directions. In many way’s this album is this generation’s Bitches Brew.  Quote me on that!  Listen to a young Fly Lo in 2006 as we sat down during my college years at KCSN to talk about the beat scene, his ambitions and inspirations.

3.

Hiatus Kaiyote – Tawk Tomahawk
Melbourne’s answer to all things hip and soulful across the the world. If you listened to my radio show this year odds are you heard one of the amazing songs on it.  Nai Palm, vocalist of the band, is a force to be reckoned with!  She recently recorded a live session in my living room which just sent shivers down my spine.  At times there are some amazing short pieces that I wish were longer but then BAM! You get hit with Mobius Streak or Nakamarra that just melt your heart to pieces.

2.

Ana Tijoux – La Bala
Some folks can tell you where they were when JFK was assassinated. Some even remember where they were when Pearl Harbor occurred. I can tell you exactly where I was when I put La Bala into my cd player in my car.  I was stuck on the 10 heading to the Natural History Museum for a gig. Every song had blended into the next. Ana killed ever line! Every kick and snare hit hard. The mix was special! The soul was present. It was part world, soul, electronic, latin and hip hop. It was everything I loved in and from music but with attitude and delivered with ease.

1.

Kendrick Lamar – Good Kid: m.AA.d City
It’s been a minute if not years that I could pop in a hip hop album and listen to its entirety, let alone beyond the first verse. After giving this album several lessons I had come to the conclusion that this album is the equivalent of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda. This record has layers, levels and hidden worlds.  Songs exist in songs. The Art of Peer Pressure reminds me of Massive Attacks’s Blue Lines while Sing About Me, I’m Dying Of Thirst is easily the best hip hop song possibly of the past 10 years.  And just when you think a club banger like Backseat Freestyle is about to get fun and dumb, Kendrick changes up his pitch and vocal range keeping the listener on edge. Its an absolute journey from start to finish. And big kudos for the addition of Sonnymoon’s Anna Wise on Real and Just Blaze for the amazing production on Compton!

HONORABLE MENTION

Anthony Valadez – Just Visiting
I spent countless hours attempting to make a record that sonically captured where I was at at that moment in my life. I attempted to create a body of music that was worthy of the amazing vocalist and musicians who lent their talents to this album. At times I thought I was a weirdo going into different directions but i had a vision in mind and looking back and listening to the album has me very proud. It’s a solid album!
