It was a positive week with peaceful protests and rallies were happening in the US and across LA. Coming into the studio and trying to create a set that touches on the human spirit and mood while still trying to help folks feels easy, but it’s not. I hope you enjoy this weekend’s sets + the Birthday Prince set on Sunday!  Ill be away for the next two weeks on KCRW but you know where you can catch me on Sunday nights!

Hey friends + fam.

New Music Friday continues during such uncertain times but I truly hope all this music helps with a little escape. I just purged through old records to make way for new sounds. Listen directly via Spotify here. Canada comes in strong with the new PartyNextDoor and Jessie Reyez who has one of the freshest voices in music today. Also on the radar is new KNXWLEDGE w/ Anderson .Paak,  And don’t sleep on Cleo Sol. Her whole production on this new album is timeless.

VALA FM 2

Wasn’t sure how often I’d do this but got positive feedback. I truly hope this adds value to your everyday lives. Ive maintained routines which include yoga in the living room, reading, dog walks and still looking for new and exciting sounds. I’m positive we will come out of this better people. You can check out more of my mixes here. If you missed Episode 1, enjoy!

Crazy times we I’ve in but the show must go on and the beat don’t stop. It’s New Music Friday to help keep us all sane and I couldn’t be more happier with my soundtrack. Normally I would be prepping for my weekend radio show and tonight’s gig but like Kanye once said “When you make plans, God laugh’s”.  Please hit me via email if you need to talk, chat. I’m here.

Slide into the dm’s/emails: anthonyvaladez (@) gmail.com

New gems from the Mac Miller deluxe release, Kutmah delivers on All City and a reissue from Hiroshi Yoshimura. Also new Villagers, Louis Prince, Sam Gendel covers as classic and Onipa with the world vibes. And big hometown love to Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhannad’s new project titled “Jazz Is Dead“. Hope you dig. Listen directly here.

5 SONGSREAL

Here we go! A new batch of positive gems to help me/you get through the day. How are you by the way? I’ve been hanging with my pup, reading the Death of WCW, listening to lots of NTS Radio, Dublab, MBE and various other stations. Also taking lots of cool pics.  Okay, hit play and peep some of my favorite gems that lift my spirit. Hope the lift yours.

Children Of Zeus – No Sunshine Tomorrow

UK’s Children Of Zeus struck with this one some time ago but it always gives me the chills. Feels timely.

Bruna Mendez – Corpo Miragem

Sultry, soulful and beautiful. Can not get enough of this clip + song.

Contour – Stop Trying to Be God (Travis Scott Cover)

Hailing out of South Carolina, this kid is creating his own lane. I’m a fan. He has new music out but this cover of Travis Scott is all the vibes I need today.

Joe Arroyo – Rebellion

I remember visiting Colombia late last year and hearing this record through out Bogotà. It’s always been a dance floor killer here in LA but to hear it in it’s roots powerful. This one never gets old.

Yusef Lateef – Love Theme From Spartacus

I know children that were born and couples that had their first dance to this beautiful gem. I remember hitching a ride to San Diego with Carlos Niño to meet brother Lateef.  He was a true humble spirit.

New songs pulled from my recent KCRW set except for the Terrance Etc. cut. Peep below!

Terrance Etc. – Infinince or Infinity

This song has been on repeat nonstop in my ear buds. From coffee runs to dog walks, on the road or while sitting in the steam room at the Y during work outs. Terrance has directed amazing videos and behind HBO’s Random Acts Of Flyness. And to hear his sonic offering has been a blessing to my ears.

DRAMA – Billy

An oldie but goodie. Got the chance to hang with them in Chicago while working on the Place In Sound podcast.  Now signed to Ghostly, we are witnessing their growth, but Billy will always have a home in my heart.

Hanni El Khatib – Stressy

With Hanni, you never know if your getting grit, soul or even something other. I love that about his music.  Wait Wait Wait still remains a favorite. This beat reminds me of 90’s Chemical Brothers. There are lots of things happening in this one song. I dig.

Thundercat – Dragonball Durag

The genius reigns supreme. Last night I played this song on KCRW and I wanted to figure out why I actually loved this song. Thundercat channels 70’s soul with 2040 lyrics. He connects worlds, but most importantly he’s having fun.

Ben Chandler – Sad Boy

Don’t know much about him, but I’m here for it!

Screen Shot 2020-02-12 at 7.39.22 AM

Gems from Belgium, Philly, South London and Queens. You can check out these artists on my weekend show on 89.9 FM in LA on KCRW or my various Spotify playlists which you can scroll down and find.

___________________________________________________________________________________________

JAGAUR JAGUAR

This new ep titled Madelyn from Belgium’s Jaguar Jaguar  has some sweet drum breaks and synths that touch on various genres and moods. The band spent some time in France away from civilization to record this new EP.  I dig.

COSMO PYKE

South London continues to give us more under the radar – raw – singer songwriters that sound amazing. Inspired by Joni Mitchell, Marley and The Beatles, Cosmo’s utilization of the instrumentation is more of a blend of Liam Bailey meets King Krule. But in a very good way.

SON LITTLE

This one is a tear jerker. I first heard this and stopped everything I was doing. Played  it on my weekend radio show and again, stopped me. ALOHA is the new album and filled with feel good soul that can heal or help with the challenges of life. It’s honest, real and emotional, yet also a celebration of life. Philly artists always packages these elements together with grace.

MARTHA DA’RO

Martha’s voice is chilling. If you get a chance check out “Fool”. Youtube won’t let me upload so, do yourself a favor, pull it up, grab the tissue and prepare for artist moody brilliance. Watch!

RAVEENA

This sultry songstress continues where she left off in keeping everything I loved about her last album, LUCID. MOONSTONE is her latest EP continues to keep me on my toes with what direction she may grow into. I’m a big fan of all her work and enjoy her evolution.

Some new adds for this week’s playlist. It’s been a rather interesting weekend for me personally. Folks from my past resurfacing, a change of moods and battling a returning cold. Music helps us push forward, right? I’m challenging myself to set goals in addition to my physical work outs to help me get out of this funk. What works for you? Let me know.  Hope you enjoy these new adds.  Make sure to subscribe and you can listen directly on Spotify.

Here we go! 5 artists with cuts that are freshly scraped from this weekend’s KCRW playlists. Every week I dig through record bins and the blogosphere to find something new and different. These artists carry that torch.

DANIEL AVERY

The return of the electronic producer known for his work with Hercules and Love Affair, Metronomy and others is back with a beautiful forthcoming LP. This single titled Illusion of Time stopped me in my tracks. It has hints of the Uncut Gems soundtrack but also has it’s own unique texture.

Phony PPL

Been a fan for a minute then randomly stumbled into one of their shows last year at SXSW. Was a surprise to see them backing Megan Thee Stallion on NPR’s Tiny Desk late last year and I’m just super proud as a music fan to see their growth.

AERIES ROVES

I know very very little about this artist but what I do know is his voice is all chills.  Out of Yorkshire, this amazing singer/songwriter opened for Billie Eilish during the European leg of her tour. I really hope this brother continues his amazing journey.

Tyler The Creator

Fresh off his recent Grammy win for best rap album for IGOR, Tyler delivers what sounds to possibly something left off the album? Regardless, Best Interest is the jam! It’s got that soul sample element we all loved in early Kanye, the flip of the vocal speed at the start, the raspy verse of Tyler, the chord change we appreciate in Earfquake, and the subject seems to take us where we left off with Frank Ocean’s Self Control.

ACIDSLOP

Melbourne continues to deliver top notch forward thinking soul. Self taught, dj/producer ACIDSLOP has such a unique grit that channels Fly Lo, day time disco and Sly Stone into one interesting body of work. Listen to more here.

5 ARTIST

Lots of new releases and finds in 2020 and only 14 days in. Don’t forget to follow my weekly Sonic Safari spotify playlists or keep tabs on my recent KCRW sets. In the mean time, here are a few stand outs found this week. More to come!

SONNY MILES

Just got hip to this creative out of North Carolina. Here’s a taste of Bedroom Hollywood. The minute I hit play on “The Kids” I got the shivers on my skin. Solid

DEVON GILFILLIAN

Hailing out of Philly, this no over night success has been putting in work. Just popped up on my radar with his latest release titled Black Hole Rainbow which is produced from by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes/The War On Drugs).  It’s gritty, loose and feel good soul. The minute you hear Devon’s voice, you know you hit something special.

MARCOS VALLE

This iconic Brazilian singer/songwriter/producer has been in the game for over 50 years and at the age of 76 just released Cinzento which exemplifies his timeless ear for soulful sonics.

Devin Morrison

I got to build with Devin Morrison last year and had no idea of his adventures and living in Japan. Recently featured on the recent Phonte solo album, I’m happy to see him continuing his journey and building his sound. Casper definitely sounds out of the box unable to label. I dig! And the layering of these harmonies!!

Mac Miller

This Thursday, Jan 17th is the release for Circles. The completed album by Jon Brion and a considered companion piece to Swimming.  I got tired of trying to convince folks who thought they had Mac figured out as another rapper. I mentioned his work with Thundercat, Fly Lo, Bilal + Little Dragon. I mentioned his ability to write actual songs with chord changes. I mentioned his ability to be a multi instrumentalist. This song is everything I tried to tell them.  And this video tho.

Honorable mention: STRETCH AND BOBBITO

I mean, two of the biggest music lovers I know working with a full band (The M19’s) and covering some of the classics with heart and soul? C’mon!

Processed with VSCO with e6 preset

Here we go! 5 new favorites that crossed my path this weekend while browsing through my usual rabbit hole of finding new gems. From Baltimore to Brazil, Sydney to the Inland Empire, here’s what I found.

Dijon

This video tho. I love the dynamics in this cut. Dijon has been on my radar for sometime but now, he’s in rotation. Insert hand clapping emoji here.

Natalie Slade

Her voice is like butter. Thanks to Si for passing this my way. Natalie should be on your radar. Worked with Simon from Hiatus Kaiyote and forthcoming album on Eglo in 2020! I’m sold on this Aussie talent.

MMYYKK

In my head I thought MMYYKK was this vocalist from Philly, grown man on some grown man ish. Turns out his soundcloud account is full of gems and I think he’s young and from SoCal. The chord changes below tho. Fire.

Luedji Luna

This voice. So strong, forceful and out of Brazil. I played this cut this weekend on KCRW and it just punched me in the gut. Good gibes coming from Luedji.

TUYO

I went through the rabbit hole and found this amazing band. This trio hailing from Brazil are bringing something new to the table. More here.

Here we go! 5 Artists with recent and timeless sounds that should be on your radar. I’ve been biking a lot more and these are the gems that are on repeat in the AirPods. Let’s kick this off, shall we?

99 NEIGHBORS

Something Kaytranada minus the lo hi filters. An 8 person squad from Vermont. Who woulda thought? More here.

CARSEN

Heater here. Been playing this for some time on the radio. But Carsen has been on the grind since popping on my radar in 2018.

HAVELOCK

Something unique here. Video is dope too! Production is equally tight. Hailing out of London, former waiter with a love for ACDC and Guns N’ Roses.

Soft Glas

2-5 years from now this brother will be a house hold name. He seems to contribute or add production to just about every buzz record. He makes amazing videos too. More here.  BTW, here’s an old video but a testament to him being timeless.

Omar Apollo

He’s back with a brand new heater channeling our inner Bad Bunny. Fire tho!

BRITTANY HOWARD

Not only does this beat bump, but Brittany is dropping some serious knowledge on her experience as a bi-racial woman. I played this cut on Sunday’s KCRW show and almost lost my mind on the drums. Brittany is seriously pushing new ground outside of Alabama Shakes and I dig it.

DANIELA ANDRADE

Timing is everything. Give Daniela some time. I’m a fan of her sound and especially this video for Genesis. This Canadian singer/songwriter is creating her own lane utilizing Youtube and various other platforms as her creative outlet.

CASHMERE CAT

This new album is really hard to put into a box. One of the reasons why I appreciate it.

FINNEAS

New release from Finneas. Thought this was some newcomer, did my research, and wow. Heavyweight! Lol. Still slaps tho!

ANNA WISE

Another heavyweight who should be on your radar. You have sung her hooks on classics but when she records on her solo material, she pushes boundaries with vocal loops, panning and just sonic goods.

Here we go! New week and new batch of favorites who have been on the grind for some time. You can listen to the cuts from last week’s KCRW sets here. But I wanted to give them some extra shine on the site. Hope you dig! Lets get down to this week’s 5!

HOLY HIVE

I got hip to this band via Big Crown which has been one of my go to labels of 2019. The trio is from multiple parts of the US but sonically feel so connected with their passion for soul and folk.

PARTIME

My discovery of the band headed by David Loca came courtesy of Tyler The Creator who sampled part of their music for one of my favorite cuts of IGOR, Puppet. I searched from the original song and was blown away by Loca’s production and lazy sway of sounds. “It’s Alright With Me” sounds like it was pulled from the record bins from someone’s timeless 70’s record collection.

BRAINSTORY

LA’s very own also part of the Big Crown family. I had the honor of hosting them for my City Beats music series and these are three of the most laid back artists I enjoyed talking music with. They know how to ride something and let it breath and groove but know when to twist it up into something special and different. Not an easy feast to do but similar in the vain of Hiatus Kaiyote.

JON VINYL

This voice is so unique and special. I recently played Nostalgia on the air at KCRW and got the chills. Not sure if the warped sample, his voice or drum programming but it all mixes so well. Looking forward to hearing more of his work and collabs.

MAC AYRES

I was hesitant to putting Mac’s name on this list since he has already been getting lots of love on blogs and music sites but his music is just that dam good. I’ve gotten feedback that there are hints of a young D’Angelo or Smoky Robinson. He definitely has his own sound. LA, he’s coming to town in November!

So a bit more time on my hands these days. This gives me more time to search deeper and harder for my weekend radio show. Instead of relying on on the same music that gets serviced to myself and the million of radio dj’s, I take great pride in digging in record bins, blogs and folks creating master pieces at home. Behold, 5 artists I came across the truly move me and hopefully move you!

BAKAR

Fresh out of London with a unique voice. Hell N Back has been on rotation on my KCRW sets and he has received co-signs from Elton John and Skepta. Check out his debut release BadKid when you get a chance!

KATE BOLLINGER

I just picked up this Charlottesville singer/songwriter’s latest EP “I Dont Wanna Lose” and instantly fell in love with the lazy notes and chords sprinkled into this beautiful project. Another gem in rotation during my KCRW sets. Check out her soundcloud when you get a chance.

HOPE TALA

Looking forward to linking with this London singer/songwriter while she is in LA. Her latest EP titled Sensitive Soul moves me every time. I can think of the last time a new artist has sent chills down my spine with such meaningful harmonies.

FARR

Heard this cut in my yoga class and can not get enough of FARR. This lovely cover does justice to its cover of La Roux’s classic. More gems courtesy of FARR’s soundcloud.

STEVAN

While browsing through my emails and music submissions, this gem stood out. TIMEE has the guitar swag of Mac Demarco or Steve Lacey with 90’s drum samples and trap vocal samples. Not an easy task to pull off. Stevan hails from Wollongong and at the age of 18 manages to pull off off songwriting/production on his own.
