5 ARTISTS I’M FEELING THIS WEEK
Lots of new releases and finds in 2020 and only 14 days in. Don’t forget to follow my weekly Sonic Safari spotify playlists or keep tabs on my recent KCRW sets. In the mean time, here are a few stand outs found this week. More to come!
SONNY MILES
Just got hip to this creative out of North Carolina. Here’s a taste of Bedroom Hollywood. The minute I hit play on “The Kids” I got the shivers on my skin. Solid
DEVON GILFILLIAN
Hailing out of Philly, this no over night success has been putting in work. Just popped up on my radar with his latest release titled Black Hole Rainbow which is produced from by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes/The War On Drugs). It’s gritty, loose and feel good soul. The minute you hear Devon’s voice, you know you hit something special.
MARCOS VALLE
This iconic Brazilian singer/songwriter/producer has been in the game for over 50 years and at the age of 76 just released Cinzento which exemplifies his timeless ear for soulful sonics.
Devin Morrison
I got to build with Devin Morrison last year and had no idea of his adventures and living in Japan. Recently featured on the recent Phonte solo album, I’m happy to see him continuing his journey and building his sound. Casper definitely sounds out of the box unable to label. I dig! And the layering of these harmonies!!
Mac Miller
This Thursday, Jan 17th is the release for Circles. The completed album by Jon Brion and a considered companion piece to Swimming. I got tired of trying to convince folks who thought they had Mac figured out as another rapper. I mentioned his work with Thundercat, Fly Lo, Bilal + Little Dragon. I mentioned his ability to write actual songs with chord changes. I mentioned his ability to be a multi instrumentalist. This song is everything I tried to tell them. And this video tho.
Honorable mention: STRETCH AND BOBBITO
I mean, two of the biggest music lovers I know working with a full band (The M19’s) and covering some of the classics with heart and soul? C’mon!

RES | CITY VIBES | FIGat7th
I’m super excited about curating this year’s talent at FIGat7th in DTLA. CITY VIBES is about showcasing locals and folks we simply love. I can’t spell the beans just yet but so far things are looking super soulful and I also brought on board a few buddies of mine to curate some special editions. But our first edition is this Saturday and none other than RES!
RES and I use to do shows at the now defunct TempleBar and Little Temple. I use to love opening for her cause you never really knew what she would do or who she would bring up stage. There was that one night she had a little known artist by the name of Santigold open up. I also had the pleasure of hitting the road with RES as we opened for Jean Grae and Talib Kweli in various cities. It was a real eye opening experience for me for to work with live musicians and provide the scratches and string samples.
This Saturday I hope you might join us for live music at FIGat7th! Come through and enjoy all the cool eateries in the area! I’ll be there as well hanging out and playing some records. Would love to see you there this Saturday. Swing through! It’s our pre Saturday night get down before I have to head to Sayers in Hollywood! (plug).
ANTVALA ON SPOTIFY
Thanks to amazing Ms. Tay aka Tayonce, I have a Spotify page! Now you can explore my online selections! I’ll do my best to do updates but these are lots of gems that I love and help me through the day and week! Let me know what you think! Take a peak.
THE REDBULL SESSIONS/PODCAST RANDOM SNAPSHOTS
I kept it on the downlow out of fear this would not happen. 16 creatives, 1 day and a couple of microphones inside the Red Bull Studios in NYC! Artists from the musical landscape and also from the visual were selected to discuss their various creative paths. And to see some of these artists engage with one another in the lobby was also awesome. I had to break out the GOPRO and camera and document a lot of this magic in one day.
This Monday I will be releasing these sessions on the blog! Possibly one every week or even 3! Trust me when I say there are some amazing and personal stories that left me inspired after we stopped recording. Stay posted and stay close! And in the mean time take a listen to previous episodes of my podcast! Big thanks to Ryan Woodhall for the engineering, Jon Oliver for production assistance and Shelley, Hannah and Marcel for helping this come into fruition!
VLOG | Episode 1
Thanks to the folks at GOPRO for the cameras. I have been documenting my journey as a person who ends up in the most random places. This past week I was in New Mexico working on a new video for my new record in addition to playing out across LA. I wanted to capture some of that magic in a new series of Vlogs. Big up to Monday night KCRW favorite Sly5thAve for the music!
YOUNG GURU X GOOGLE GLASS
This is something special! Technology is changing super fast. So fast that It’s a bit hard to stay with the times. Being a stubborn Aries I like to stick what works and what I master but this Google Glass just shook up the game. I just might have to change my old ways! This video demonstrates how the young, music generation can benefit with the product. Young Guru is a fine ambassador for the brand and displays the many usages of the Google Glass. Let me know what you think!
IN CONVERSATION – OSCAR KEY SUNG
I first heard his music and I must confess it, it was a little strong on the sexy side of things. Cool in terms of sonic texture but this distinct vocal that kinda kicked in assuring the listener that everything was cool and turn down the lights. But the more I began to listen the more I started to appreciate the sonic textures of all the sounds. And then it all clicked. And then I heard the Miguel cover of “Sure Thing” and then I fell in love! I appreciate what he is doing with the beats and song writing all merged together into a collage that is so dam unique!
I hope you dig this chat with Melbourne’s Oscar Key Sung. He just did a US Tour and we discuss his experiences of playing new music for a new audience as well as his appreciation for metal music and woman! Enjoy and peep more of his music here.

CHINATOWN SUMMER NIGHTS RECAP
Night one was awesome! I got there early enough to catch some of the energy and bump into my dude Roy Choi! Great ceremonies by the local Martial Arts group, unveiling of the Bruce Lee statue and many cool vendors and live performances presented by the LA Weekly. It was awesome to see so many friends come out and get down with us on a Saturday evening! KG arrived and we just cranked it up a few notches only to blow the power towards the end of our set. Apologies! Somehow we managed to get everyone in the plaza to partake in a massive group hug! But once all systems were go again Liza Richardson took over and it was back to the dancing! We still have a couple more community gatherings left including the Skirball, The Hammer Museum and the screening and 30th Anniversary of Style Wars in Hollywood! Stay close to the blog for more info!
