It’s the return of Grammy Nominated singer/songwriter Emily King to the podcast! This time my pal and colleague Aaron Byrd joins me with co-hosting duties as we talk with Emily about her creative influences in piecing together her forthcoming album entitled The Switch which drops June 26th! Emily also blesses the microphone with a live 2 song set including the title track and one of our personal favorites, Distance.  Hope you enjoy as much as we enjoyed hearing about Aaron’s owl tales in Peru!  Enjoy!

I’m not exactly sure how Nick Hakim appeared on my radar but I remember it was in the form of a video that made me stop everything and listen. The chords, the lyrics, the change and vibes all came from an authentic and pure place. This year folks got to see him drop 2 powerful self released EP’s and also contribute to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Bubblers series. We talk about his love for Brand Nubian to Cody ChesnuTT. Hope you dig and enjoy previous episodes here!

This week’s guest on the podcast is Dj and Grammy Nominated producer Twilite Tone. Man, do yourself a solid and google him! I really wanted to avoid the obvious questions of “What was it like working with Kanye West” and somehow I achieved it but it was definetly on the back of my mind. How did this one man balance producing for heavyweights and yet still maintain a connection to the streets and dj culture? Listening to this chat I found the answer, true passion for music and creativity.  Twilite Tone connects the dots on possibly one of the most interesting but productive conversations in all my podcasts. Hope you dig! And go peep his soundcloud! Some great stuff there.

This was a great chat that touches on what happens when musicians from around the globe record in NYC and the beautiful outcome that comes with it. It’s the sound clash of tomorrow meets yesterday with with a psychedelic twist! Efrain drops by and breaks down the inspiration behind La Mecanica Popular! And if you are in NYC this weekend they have a big show in Central Park with Louie Vega on the decks this Saturday! Go check em out!

On today’s podcast we get to sit and talk it up w/ Jean Grae. I was a little nervous about this one since I know how brilliant Jean’s mind works but we ended up having an amazing conversation about being heady and the sense of perception that folks have of her. The NYC emcee is easily in my top 5 and continues to find new forms of expressing herself including a webisode series and working with comedians John Hodgman and Wyatt Cenac. Hope you dig! And follow Jean for updates!

Grammy nominated singer/songwriter Emily King swung through the RedBull Studios in NYC to talk about her journey of ups and downs plus a special treat to meet her mother who served as a wonderful backbone to the artist! Emily opens up about label deals that attempted to change who she was as a person and her reaction. This was a great conversation that left me pretty inspired about this music industry thanks to Emily’s hope and talent. Plus Mama King jumps in with ultimate wisdom! Hope you dig!

I first got hip to Sophia Chang via her amazing site. Having played with photoshop I often wondered how she was able to do these amazing illustrations of rappers and NY figures. I then got hip to her work with Staple Design and had been bugging her for a while about being on my podcast. Since then she has been curating projects, featured on Hypebeast and has a project in the works with Puma!  This was a great conversation that included what it’s like to design for the NBA and still have your parents ask “When are you going to get a real job?”. Hope you dig this chat!

Here is Episode One, the kick off to a series of conversations I had in NYC last week with some amazing artists across the creative spectrum. Jesse Boykins III has one of the coolest and smoothest voices in the game but is also a visual treat to watch on stage. He just dropped his new album entitled Love Apparatus which I finally got to finish on the plane back to LA.. It’s an amazing journey from start to finish that explores human connection with one another with an awesome sound pallet to accompany the record.  We discuss his creative process when working with producers including Machine Drum as well has his vocal studies with Bilal. Hope you dig!

Great hang tonight at East Village Radio w/ Jon Oliver + crew. I came on a really great night and got to hear the incredible music of James Tillman. Originally from DC and now based in NYC, Tillman recorded his most recent EP in Brasil and it sounds amazing! Check him out and also check out my dude Jon Oliver’s show as well! Also peep the local action happening outside the magical windows of EVR!

Day One of rehearsals for this big show is done. We finished rehearsals and I instantly headed to the Lower East Side to snap some shots and grab some Bao! Baohaus is the spot! Managed to break out the camera and take a walk for several blocks.  Quite the contrast from my last trip along Interstate 15. Hope you dig!

It’s been quite the adventurous day in the city. Sometimes I forget what goes on in this city with all the honking, the lack of fear in the cab driver, the folks walking with a purpose to their destination, the pigeon fearlessly in your way and so on. I did have a ball dropping a set last night on East Village Radio w/ Jon Oliver to promote my new album (which you can purchase here). Today I get to explore and work out of the New York RedBull office with some great projects I can’t wait to share with you. Peep yesterday’s snapshots!

DSC_0003 DSC_0010 DSC_0021 DSC_0030 DSC_0062 DSC_0077 DSC_0082 DSC_0084 DSC_0092 DSC_0094 DSC_0098 DSC_0115 DSC_0127 DSC_0130 DSC_0132 DSC_0135 DSC_0140 DSC_0149

Hey! New week and new list of thing’s I’m digging. Volume 3. Every morning I wake up and check out blogs and find interesting things that I love sharing.  So this is my wrap up. Ps! Did you listen to last night’s radio show? Did you peep the podcast with this week’s guests? Have a great evening!

New Disclosure production working with NYC’s Bishop Nehru! Nice to hear Disclosure work in a slower bpm format on this. Looking forward to hearing more of this! I’m on track 3 of his Nehruvia mix tape and pretty solid. Download more of Bishop’s work.

Damon Albarn returns with this great track and video for his solo debut release. All these years with Blur, Gorillaz and various projects you would have thought he might have had something out. I’m digging this cut! The utilization of keys and strings are nice!

I’m not sure what’s going on below but the font’s are on point and perfectly spaced. By no means am I promoting this show. If you go, cool. Let me know how it went but the spacing of the letters are on point!

Big thanks to Nikki Jean for swinging through the basement this past Monday and hanging. Future guest on the podcast? Hmmmmmmm… Maybe? Peep her new video!

Breakfast at Zelda’s in Venice was cool. Living here 5 years and just got hip to the mini donuts. Super good! If your in the area make sure to stop by and pay them a visit!

Hurry Curry is no joke! Heavy on the tummy even though. I geeked out on the Chicken and Nan. Pretty cool little spot on Venice Blvd. But this shot pretty sums up the vibe. Not exactly sure how tho’.

Here is my second installment of WHAT I’M DIGGIN, my weekly installment of trolling the blogs and sites and blending into a blog post to save you time. I’m not a fashion head (and far from it). I prefer to wake up, throw on whatever is comfy and walk the dog but I think that’s kind of the common theme here.

I had the honor of visiting Pigalle in 2011 while doing some dj dates in Europe. I fell in love with this shop. It had a sense of LA’s Fairfax district. A group of local musicians and producers dragged me to this spot and the vibes were just right. Pigalle has hosted some wildness including a live set from Dead Prez. These kids have captured the LA/NY street wear aesthetic but on their own terms. Cool folks and glad to see them doing it!

Nick Wooster is the kind of dude I want to be when I grow much older in my skin. The stache, the cut, the military inspired attire. At 51 he still has a young spirit and articulates his vision to much youthful audience. I’ve been trolling his videos and secretly in the morning they kind of inspire my attire for the day.

This one is killing two birds with one stone. If you have listened to my radio show late last year odds are you might have heard a lot of Joey Bada$$. One of my favorite video directors Vashtie teamed up with him and shot a video for the track Waves. This “making of” video could have easily been another video for another song. What I love about Joey is his ability to bridge the golden era with the second golden era of today! Back to Vashtie! Did I mention she actually got to design her own Jordan sneaker?!

Some of personal faves at the moment. A collection of the visual, fashion with a blend of music. Kirkis has been getting love on my radio show for a minute now. Ratking is playing Coachella and finally on people’s radars. Sophia Chang + Ari have an amazing eye and creative process. King Krule just dropped a new vid worth catching. Peep below…

Kirkis is from Melbourne. Brought to my attention from the Wondercore camp and continiously blows me away with his musical doings. This is a totally bugged out video but I like it!

Ratking hail from NY. I had the honor of playing with them at the RedBull Soundselect party at CMJ and man! What an expieience watching these youngin’s take the stage and command of the crowd. Visuals on point thanks to Ari Marcopoulos.

Speaking of Ari. Get hip to his work. I found this inspiring piece on him breaking down his experiences as a photographer on the train.

Sophia Chang is an ill illustrator! Her designs make me scratch my head. I tried to get her on my podcast this week but no response. She’s in town for the Babes Show in Long Beach but oh well! Once bumped into her at Reed Space in NY but was too nervous to say what up. Peep her work

King Krule just dropped a video for A Lizard State. This album made my Top 10 of last year. Video is super cool with a throw back to the visuals and stylings of a Hitchcock flick.

This week’s guest is someone who’s design work I had long admired having created covers for the likes of Foreign Exchange , Little Brother and many others. Through his work I had began to grow visible of his brand. Thanks to world of Twitter I was able to put a face with this unique aesthetic and I began following him and his opinions which would always give me a chuckle. I have always been a fan of his duality of being in different worlds in the commercial setting while championing under the radar sounds and artists.  Recently FMWJ has started a label with access to some amazing sounds from Houston and his personal favorites. Again, the visual aesthetics are on point!  Hope you dig this chat.

Listen to previous episodes of In Conversation w/ Anthony Valadez.

Got to visit the Red Bull NYC building today and explore the Write Of Passage exhibit which explores the impact of American graffiti art on global culture. Mass Appeal did a great job putting this together which includes a giant SKEME piece and a reconstruction of an actual subway setting.  It was also cool to check out the RBMA radio station in the building and meet some of the great folks who are making things happen at this wonderful institution that supports creativity and community. It was also a pleasure to meet co-founder of Ego Trip/Mass Appeal Sacha Jenkins who had lead a workshop  earlier in the space and is also curating the WOP exhibit. It’s open to the public! If you are in the city make sure to swing by and check it out! More info can be found here.  Thanks Shelley + Hannah and all the cool folks for the great visit!

I met Kissey a few years back while doing some shows in LA as well as joining me for a Dublab session. Her debut release Plethora release caught the attention of lots of djs at the station and somehow a friendship began to develop. It was nice to reunite and talk about her interesting journey as a young Swedish vocalist who transitioned into a NYC beatmaker dabbling into dance music. Hope you dig this one!

Big up’s to homie Nati from NYC for passing this my way. We use to do a night over at Footsies about 4-5 years ago w/ Gomez and guests like Kutmah or Andres Renteria would swing through and she would always pass me the names of bands that are under the radar. I think she struck gold with this one!  I played one of their cuts on one of my KCRW shows but didnt hear much from them after. This fine gem turned up in my inbox and I am really diggin the vibes on this ! Let me know what you think! More info on the band and track can be found here.

* Note – I will def be playing this track tonight at Cana Rum Bar in DTLA!  All kinds of world sounds being played on two turntableas. Swing through and lounge it up! Info.

Leo has always intrigued me. From his early role in Kids to his rise in the NYC art and literary scene, he is that kid that just is doing what he loves and accepts it. Simple yet full of ideas which he expresses in his work.  I’m trying to find this book but I came across this great interview promoting his new book entitled “Born Dead“.

Crazy day! It’s been a minute since the first batch of SXSW batch of pics were posted. Kicked things off with Poolside followed by a panel with Clive Davis who I listened to across the way while waiting for the Kendrick Lamar X Elliot Wilson chat to kick off.  I have to say it’s refreshing to hear a current and important emcee admit he is shy and enjoys being in the cave. It’s also great to hear Kendrick speak of the importance of longevity in music today. This was a great chat to be heard by lots of young ones in attendance.  I also got some shots of some cool interesting folk!  Enjoy!

Big thanks to Cheryl Dunn for this wonderful gift I received in the mailbox today!  I sat down with her a year or two ago prior to her contribution to the Art In The Streets exhibit at Moca.  The night before we chatted I did my research and immediately felt a connection to her work. Her film projects which I viewed on vimeo instantly struck me!  Her candid chats with NY folk including Ricky Powell instantly affirmed my belief in her ability to not only capture visual beauty but to communicate and capture the essence of honesty and beauty in people!  Listen to our chat as part of KCRW’s Guest Dj Project!  If your able to find one of these bad boys then pick it up! Actually pick up anything Cheryl Dunn! Go google her work and thank me later!

Great way to start off the day bypassing the Italian Day Parade on 7th Avenue and exploring Washington Park and I met the Birdman. This brother was really cool and loved the birds. I think upon first glance I could understand why this might freak out some folks but I appreciated his love for the birds. In such a chaotic city it was nice to see his affection for pigeons.

Stephen Wiltshire is a British architectural artist who has been diagnosed with autism. When I heard of his story I was intrigued and began looking at his work and was really moved at his ability to use scribbles as a sky line and make the horizon look complete.  I guess the same can be safe for  architectural icon Frank Gehry who began with tiny scribbles and wrinkled paper later turning them into amazing homes and landmarks.

But most importantly amazing is his ability to draw from memory after seeing things only once!  At age 3 he was diagnosed as mute and then autistic.
Peep the video below to get an idea of how Stephen Wiltshire gets down! Very inspiring.
