In the spirit of MLK and after playing a set at Into Action this weekend I found a few albums that shaped identity and questioned authority in sonic form. Gems from Bad Brains, J Cole, Fela and Louis Armstrong are featured.

Also, new found gems from 30/70 (Melbourne), Cautious Clay (Thanks Karli Hustle), Black Milk (KCRW supporter), Jonny Greenwood (This guy can do no wrong) and lots more. hope you enjoy! In honor of the late great Joe Frank, later in the 2 hour we hear selections from his work entitled Prayer. Also another inspiration was Michael Mixxin’ Moor who served as CNN to the streets during his early 90’s radio program on KCRW.

Gem discovery of the year comes from Melbourne’s 30/70 from a record that dropped a few years ago.  Also James Blake returns with a cover of a classic, plus Art Feynman kills it on a low fi four on the floor banger entitled “Shelter“. If I could explain the new power of the new Frank Ocean record I would compare it to an early Harmony Korine flick. So powerful I had to sneak in two back to back cuts. Love this dude! Sat in the hotel room scrolling through some of his videos and came across this gem!  Dude can actually sing! Rhyme! And these beats and synths!! Diggin this track!  As a bonus peep his new video “Robert Raimon Roy” which looks like a David Lynch flick. Good stuff from this local emcee.

I first caught glimpse of Roy Roy at an event a few years back over in Hollywood and was not sure what I was watching. On one hand he was almost a comedian-like emcee who was in a zone.  He was dead on serious delivering every line on the mic while his friends and fans were either laughing at him or with him. I could not understand the chemistry of the situation. But everyone joined in on the chorus of each of the songs.  Needless to say, this is a really cool video for “Fur In My Cap”.  Hope you enjoy.
