Here we go! 5 artists with cuts that are freshly scraped from this weekend’s KCRW playlists. Every week I dig through record bins and the blogosphere to find something new and different. These artists carry that torch.

DANIEL AVERY

The return of the electronic producer known for his work with Hercules and Love Affair, Metronomy and others is back with a beautiful forthcoming LP. This single titled Illusion of Time stopped me in my tracks. It has hints of the Uncut Gems soundtrack but also has it’s own unique texture.

Phony PPL

Been a fan for a minute then randomly stumbled into one of their shows last year at SXSW. Was a surprise to see them backing Megan Thee Stallion on NPR’s Tiny Desk late last year and I’m just super proud as a music fan to see their growth.

AERIES ROVES

I know very very little about this artist but what I do know is his voice is all chills. Out of Yorkshire, this amazing singer/songwriter opened for Billie Eilish during the European leg of her tour. I really hope this brother continues his amazing journey.

Tyler The Creator

Fresh off his recent Grammy win for best rap album for IGOR, Tyler delivers what sounds to possibly something left off the album? Regardless, Best Interest is the jam! It’s got that soul sample element we all loved in early Kanye, the flip of the vocal speed at the start, the raspy verse of Tyler, the chord change we appreciate in Earfquake, and the subject seems to take us where we left off with Frank Ocean’s Self Control.

ACIDSLOP

Melbourne continues to deliver top notch forward thinking soul. Self taught, dj/producer ACIDSLOP has such a unique grit that channels Fly Lo, day time disco and Sly Stone into one interesting body of work. Listen to more here.

SXSW | DAY THREE

Day Three was a killer but worth it. We were able to shoot and hang with Little Dragon at the Huf House which was settled in a cute little Austin neighborhood. I had tons of questions so it was nice to actually learn some of those answers which will be aired on a future broadcast of NUVOtv’s The Collective! After we headed to the park to connect with the amazing Ana Tijoux for a chat about her new album, perspective on music and life and I must say that was super heavy and beautiful. Sitting there next to the river and listening to her drop knowledge about how motherhood has changed her life and how the media exploits culture for profit was refreshing to hear in the midst of all this corporate madness here.After dinner we swung through to the Belmont for the Redbull Soundselect party and caught Thurz kill it with a live band followed by my faves Denitia And Sene who somehow with their mellow soul flow rocked an OFWGKTA party! Earl Sweatshirt was next who was joined by Tyler The Creator and Taco and from there is was mayhem! Peep the pics.

IN CONVERSATION – MOONCHILD

I came across this band at a day time music festival at the Bootleg in LA. I was on the bill and arrived a little early to explore the space. I heard something soulful whole entering one of the rooms and was curious. When I saw these guys and a gal on stage I was instantly in love. It definitely had that Soulqaurian vibe championed by the likes of D’Angelo, Questlove and Badu. I introduced myself after their set and asked for a cd. The very next night I threw it into rotation on my radio show and got positive feedback. Also surprising was the co/signage from the likes of Tyler The Creator, Jill Scott and receiving a nice remix from Jazzy Jeff and James Poyser. Hope you dig this week’s chat! “GLOWING” DIRECTED BY TYLER THE CREATOR

Sometimes I just dont get Tyler the Creator and Odd Future. But every time I try to write off Tyler he some how comes back with a formula that earns kudos points with me EVERY DAM TIME! His twitter feud with Will I Am is pretty fun to watch and again, Tyler scores more cool points with me. But it’s this video that showcases his directing talents with “Glowing”. Word is his manager Chris Clancy played the song for him on a plane and Tyler was drawn to the song and decided to shoot a video for it. But wait! How incredible is this song?! How incredible are the lyrics? Piano? The artist of the actual song is unknown which makes me scratch me head although I think its fair to see he has a forthcoming album on Capital.

LOOKING BACK | SNAPSHOTS

One of my best investments is my camera. Life is short. I often wonder what my seeds might think when they look back at this blog. Im not really sure I keep a blog. Sure I love art, culture, changing tides in fashion and music but this is more than that. This is a documentation of time and space. From everything I play on the radio to being allowed to have the freedom to do the things that I wish to do (i.e interviews, mixes, chats) and just capturing all that surrounds me. It allows me to do things my way. It’s not always the best way but its my creative hub to do the things that I feel get pushed aside.

When I look at these pics I am reminded of folks who took art into a direction that made them content at that time. I was in the right place at the right time to snap these shots of them in a certain place and they were okay with that. The trust between an artist and person with a camera is sacred. I am grateful to be able to capture these musical movements with a radio show and a camera but I prefer to be on the front lines with camera in two, microphone on and ready to record. I love to be in that space of creation. Being able to document it with a camera is exciting! I encourage you to create your blog! Capture whats around you. Create a podcast! Enjoy these snapshots!
