 It’s the return of Grammy Nominated singer/songwriter Emily King to the podcast! This time my pal and colleague Aaron Byrd joins me with co-hosting duties as we talk with Emily about her creative influences in piecing together her forthcoming album entitled The Switch which drops June 26th! Gangs somehow popped up on my radar with the lush and dark track “This Time Around“. I did my research and found out these mysterious folks were in LA and on indie label “New Los Angeles“. I began playing a couple tracks off their EP and knew instantly I wanted to talk and get to know what inspires this sound.

We made home at The RedBull Studios in LA for a Sunday evening and chopped it up alongside Luis Blanco who helps run the label alongside the duo. And we get to hear material from Tom Ward (who is on New Los) as well as an exclusive listen to the bands new material!

I’ve been away for 5 months doing my thing at The SLS Hotel in Vegas and since then I have been rocking a few parties in the Bay Area. The Bay in many ways reminds me of Friday night’s at Zanzibar. Folks of different backgrounds, experiences, ethnicities coming together to wrap up a work week with some old and new sounds. KG Superstar and I always prided ourselves with all that love under one roof. I’m super stoked to be back behind the turntables (and minutes away from home) and taking things up a notch. I just completed some new visuals for the night and being away from home you kind of realize what you took for granted from a dj perspective. It’s about that time of year where we say goodbye to 2014 and bring in the New Year! I’m super exited to be back home in Santa Monica for this NYE at my home away from home, Zanzibar! Rain vibes always keep a crowd indoors. Big love to all the folks who helped us celebrate an end to a work week accompanied by a little rain and thunder. It was a fun feel and I managed to break out some records I totally forgot I had in my collection. It was also good to see some regulars in the building getting down with KG Superstar and myself. What a night! What a night! Energy was turnt up and folks got down with us for another fam bam Friday night edition of The Goods. Big thanks to KG Superstar for always bringing the healthy juices to balance out the slice of pizza I grabbed en route to Zanzibar. I usually take a walk around the block before hitting the turntables and I could already hear the crowd inside going insane to a pre mix I had made earlier in the day. I walked into to see about 50 people losing their minds and then it was time to take it up a notch.  We hope to see you next week for our final jump off in 2013!  NYE 2014 I’ll be bringing the party to the Cana Rum Bar in DTLA! LOS GIRLS X TORO

Nick Rosen and I have a project we do under the moniker of LOS GIRLS. We have been working on new material since our last EP on Plug Research. Along the way we knocked out this cool rework of Cola by Toro Y Moi. In between sessions we would layer in drums, cello plucks and anything else that would complement this re work. Hope you dig! Almost there! November 19th is the date for  on my first single set to drop on Plug Research. The forthcoming LP  features some of my favorite artist and musicians from around the world who collaberated on this project  which I am excited to share in early 2014.  The first single features LA emcee/producer/musician Zack Sekoff who kills the track “Zack’s Thesis“. I mean KILLS IT!  You can also get to know Zack, who was a recent guest on my podcast. Listen!  Remixes will also feature my band Los Girls (project with Nick Rosen) and Kalva Won. Both remixes really surprised me and are set into two different musical spectrums.  The video for the single  is set to drop in the coming weeks and features a few of our friends set somewhere in DTLA. This is so ultra I actually had to delay my flight for this. Jose James comes to my neighborhood for a first of 2 two shows in Venice.  This is one of my top albums of 2013 with no question.
I got to catch Jose do an Apogee session for KCRW a few months back and I was blown away. You can see the video after the jump.  And its not the first time I was blown away by his performance. One of the best live shows with one of the best bands in tow! Get your tix!  Worth every dollar and cent.  Hope to see you there!

I dont think I had this much fun dj’ing for a great bunch of folks in a long time! Cana Rum Bar was full of love last night. I got to meet lots of great KCRW listeners and followers of my blog last night. It’s almost like where these different social worlds of friends and new friends collide. I started out the night with a mix of world sounds, cumbia, bhangra, salsa and worked my way to party classics at the end of the night to a diverse room. Many of the regulars I’m assuming made their way from Staples Center where our beloved team, well… next year!  Anyways, A big thanks to all the friends who made it out and a lot old the old friends who use to make it out to my Silverlake gigs!  I wrapped up the night with a quick stop to the taco truck and snapped some cool pics after the night. Hope you dig!  I’m back on the east side baby! DTLA! Saturday nights at Sayers is where folks either end up in the air, thrashing into the drum kit, hanging from some elevated place, on the dance floor, head bobbing on the couch or on the deck. Last night we managed to witness 2 out of the previously mentioned. Derek Taylor and I raged through the soundsystem last night inside one of LA’s mysterious and fun spots hidden on the corner of Hollywood and Wilcox. Watching folks faces the second they step into this home of musical wizardry is priceless!  I had a lot of fun!

Tonight! Our first 2012 session of the year and Im super excited to be back at my second home on the west side.  Last was we ended on such a high note. Feeling super inspired, KG Superstar and I hopped the fence across the street and skated across the ice rink in our kicks.  Anyhoo, Tonight we proceed to give you what you need at Zanzibar. Never Never Never step to Rich Medina asking him to play some B Boy joints.  Brother Medina will break out the 45’s with the vinyl cracks and play some records that were just might wear you out on the dance floor!  Dj 88 started things off with some classic soul and break beats and me knowing it was an “anything goes” type of night blended in some house cuts, a nice Maga Bo cut remixed by Sabo and a few joints off the Soundways label.  The dancers came out and got down!  I had lots of fun getting down and taking the occasional break to play a game of Super Mario Brothers and only got to level 8-2!  Insert Coins is the spot you need to be at when in Vegas! Great music ran by great folks who love what they do!
